Lupita Nyong’o Oscars Countdown Style Double Shot

Posted on March 02, 2014

Check this girl out. We hear she’s kind of stylish.

The kittens have a history of hating anything with a Stella McCartney label slapped onto it, but y’all might have to get over yourselves with this one. Miss Lupita is making that alligator-print romper WERQ, darlings. AND she’s wearing perfect shoes! Truly this is a magical moment.

This is also a magical moment – until you get to her feet. We can’t even. We suspect Michael Kors burst into tears when he saw them. Because aside from what’s going on south of the ankles, this look is ridiculously hot and chic. She’s making that Kors dress SING.

Living for that winged eye. Her face was made for the look. And the hair is, of course, fabulous beyond words. It’s hard to believe, looking at her face and hair, that these two sets of pictures were taken within a day of each other. True motherfucking style.

No, even Lupita cannot save Stella McCartney. That jumpsuit is like a live version of Anaconda. The shoes ARE fierce though

From now on, I think TLo should crop her feet out of the pictures

  • @Biting Panda

I’m so relieved!! I’ve hated her bronze moments, she had me all kinds of concerned. But now, I’m set back to giddy anticipation for tonight.

Uncles, did you see my tweet? Lupita + Michael 4Eva!!

  • Scimommy

The first look I could take or leave, but the second is 100% fabulous head to… ankle. Looove the hairdo – it’s managing to be fierce, fabulous, and adorable all in one.

    • what not

I can’t tell if I like the hair or not. It’s an awesome natural fascinator…that also kind of looks like a tongue. But I think it works for me.

  • It’s not that it’s Stella McCartney, it’s that it’s a long-sleeve, zip-front, python-print romper with weirdly balloony shorts. Yes to hair and makeup, even to the shoes, and no to both outfits.

    • Chickadeep

EXACTLY. Not just the tint of Stella that is ruining that for me. I adore Ms. Lupita and her mad style chops, but I can’t even with grown women wearing anything described as a “romper.” Rompers are for toddlers.

The cat-eye makeup is fab on her, though.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

It’s the balloony part that kills it for me as well.

    • what not

I think it’d be great as a jacket, but then it gets all poofy around the waist and hips. And not in an intentional-looking, architectural way, it just doesn’t fit right.

    • Dam_Angel

She may be bringing natural hair to a new level. With each of her looks-her hair is styled differently. I hope more black women begin to adopt her creativity and embrace their curls.

  • ralish

Oh! I love that first look on her, and I hate jumpsuits! She needs to burn those blue velvet (satin?) shoes. She’s worn them before, yes? They photograph horribly and it’s not a good color for her.

  • filmcricket

Stella McCartney gator print romper. Words that should strike fear into the heart of anyone with, well, eyes – and yet she is making the whole thing sing. I’m flabbergasted.

Hate pretty much everything about the 2nd look except her face, which is, as usual, miraculous.

    • TigerLaverada

My thoughts exactly on both counts.

    • demidaemon

I’m so with you, for the most part. I don’t hate the second look, but I do think her face and hair is doing most of the work there.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Her face and hair are always perfect, but I dislike both of these looks. The McCartney almost makes it, but it makes her look hippy and she ain’t. If the bottom were a skirt and not shorts, maybe. The Kors seems to be riding too low on the bust, and I bet she was tugging it up all night. But you’re right, it’s the shoes that really put the nail in the coffin of the last one.

  • kt

The first is hideous. Whoever keeps dressing her in children’s rejected clothes needs to cut it out. She looks terrible. BUT, the second one? Style, charisma, personality and the mf’ing face!!! She looks amazing.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I love the earrings she’s wearing with the Michael Kors, even if (or maybe because of that) they simulate the eyeliner. I love her more when she does this type of looks than when she does standard red carpet gowns, and she seems to have more fun with these looks.

  • Nicholas

    Legs for days.

  • ChaCha_70

Team Lupita! I’m sooo excited for tonight!!

  • Janet B

Surprising myself; I like the jumpsuit more than the dress.

  • altalinda

Yes to the romper — it seems appropriate to the Independent Spirit awards, and she’s making it work. For the second look, I wish it had straps; it looks like it’s dragging her breasts down, and straps might counterbalance that effect.

  • AmeliaEve

The Michael Kors really shows off her amazing arms and shoulders, and the little pompadour brings out the retro-fabulous Rita Hayworth qualities of the dress. She is even making the length work, but oh, those blue shoes. I want to ‘shop in the black suede pumps from the Stella thing.

  • butterflysunita

Yes, she’s somehow making that romper work–but that doesn’t change the fact that it is one ugly piece of clothing. Shame on you Stella.
Love her hair and makeup in the second look.

  • I am here for all of this. At risk of over praising, this is everything I have ever wanted out of hair, makeup and fashion – the ability to completely transform daily and project whatever image I want to suit a variety of occasions.

Fabulous and I can’t wait to see what she wears tonight.

  • shaziz

  • lalahartma

    That romper makes me sad.

    • golden_valley

Rompers, especially tailored ones, do not look good. That is all.

  • lrhoff

Neither outfit impresses me. She could have done better…or her stylist should have.

  • Verascity

I love the romper, but I hate the second dress. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE *LOVE* that hair, though.

  • SRQkitten

When I first saw the McCartney elsewhere I thought it was a jacket and shorts, which was kind of fierce and appropriate for independent spirit awards. But a romper? EWWW? Only Stella could take Ms. Lupita and try to sabotage her fabulosity with a garment that really is, as others noted, appropriate for toddlers.

The other thing I am L-O-V-I-N-G is how her stylists are switchin’ up her hair looks from event to event. Take that dated notion of natural hair and turn it on its (pardon the pun) head!

    • MilaXX

My sister is planning to do a big chop due to heat damage from too frequent a visit to the Dominican hair shops. She’s planning to do something tapered with length on top so we can play around with different looks. I’m going to show her this picture of Lupita.

  • Pennymac

    Holy shitballs. That is all.

  • LJCdoc

She’s making it her life goal to make me not hate Stella. Unfortunately, this “romper” on anybody but Lupita would be heinous. I am NOT converted!

  • Yolanda13

I know I bursted into tears when I saw those hideous blue bridesmaid shoes.

  • And I love how the shape of the earring echoes the winged eyeliner. PS: Perrier-Jouet is my favorite champagne. Seeing Miss Lupita’s amazing visage next to that of my favorite champagne logo is giving me extra love for her. Not quite enough to make me forgive the shoes…..but then again, that would take a miracle. They are truly awful.

  • mcbishop

This woman is madly beautiful and fiercely dignified in spite of whatever she wears, never because of it. She elevates whatever she puts on. I love that she wears the clothes–they don’t wear her.

  • elzatelzabelz

Agreed on cropping out her feet, they are the only things that make her anything less than a “Bow Down, B*tches” every single day. I normally hate rompers and Stella McCartney looks, but she is fierce. Flawless-except for the blue shoes.

  • mcbishop

I was just reading IMDB about her, and realized she’s only 5’5″! Are you as surprised as I am?

    • Yes! I would have thought she was 5’7 at least! Although I seem to remember a bit in TLo’s book about lying about your height.

  • kmk05

I love the romper (am I dating myself? Because I love these things) and there is nothing to say about that entire outfit because it is perfect: her hair looks phenomenal, she is wearing earrings that don’t clash with an alligator-exposed zipper-romper-stella thing, and her accessories are right on point: rings and a modern clutch and these shoes! *swoons*

The second one is amazing (apart from the shoes), with an amazing retro feel. But what I love most are the earrings, which she is repurposing. I think they might actually be hers, and I want a version of them with the fire of a thousand suns.

  • Danielle

She’s absolutely gorgeous, and I’m getting shades of Viola Davis in the second to last shot. Living for miss Lupita’s hair too.

  • Jessica Freeman

Who is this Lupita person and why has she never been featured on this blog?!

She’s killing it in both of these outfits. Huge needle scratch on the blue satin shoes.

    • MilaXX

Check the tags, TLo has been featuring her for some time now. She’s an actress nominated for supporting actress in the movie 12 Years a Slave.

    • fiddlecub

Wait–seriously? For the last few months, Lupita has possibly been the most-featured celebrity in this blog.

      • Suzanne Johnson

I may be wrong, but I strongly suspect Jessica has her tongue planted firmly in her cheek.

        • demidaemon

I got that, despite the typed text. Unless everyone is participating in an extended bout of sarcasm and we’re getting supremely trolled. Which would be kind of fun yet mean.

          • Jessica Freeman

Yes, it was a sarcastic call back to the Uncles mentioning how often she’s been on the blog. Not a complaint from me. I’ve enjoyed her pole dance and will be sad now that it is over.

  • ashtangajunkie

Goddess. Her hair in the second look is a new level of perfection that I didn’t even know existed.

  • Lilyana_F

J’adore everything minus the fug shoes. A true head scratcher of a choice for me… I can understand the idea for a pop of color, but SATIN?

  • formerlyAnon

It is approaching Tilda-level powers to make a reptile print romper look good. I don’t think she HAS Tilda-level powers, she has a good stylist and youth on her side – but she IS pulling it off.

  • GeoDiva

Those Breaking 2 Electric Blue Bugaloo shoes need to be destroyed!

  • boweryboy

Three! Three Stella McCartney outfits Lupita has elevated to the glam stratosphere! If Stella is smart she’ll hire Lupita to be the face of her line.

I can’t even with those damn blue shoes in the second photo. The hell?

    • ashtangajunkie

Those damn blue shoes hurt my feelings. Ugliest things in the world.

  • lifeisastory

    The first outfit is awful.

  • alyce1213

What? WERQ? No way. That Stella jumpsuit is a parody, no? A hideous snake print shorts romper by Stella McCartney! Someone’s punking us. I love the shoes and bag, though.
The second just makes me mad — a tweed dress with ab cutout? The bottom half of which makes her look boxy and old? No. Beautiful face and hair, but NO on the Kors dress as well.
I see this dip in fashion positively. When she appears tonight looking like a goddess is a drop-dead gown, it will be that much better.

  • Akemi

She has a way of rocking outfits that would look completely ridiculous on anyone else. Namely; me.

  • DagnyReardon

Someone needs to an intervention and toss all the old bridesmaid shoes out.

  • Claudia Berry

I want Micaela Erlanger to style my life! She’s doing an amazing job with Lupita. Except fro them nasty ass shoes.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I told Mr. B3 last night that Lupita was probably the only woman who could make that romper work-and so she is. What was even more adorable was Lupita leaping into Steve McQueen’s arms and his bearhugging her and half carrying her toward the stage!
Love the MK dress on Lupita. Perhaps we ought to be grateful that she has a shoe problem-otherwise she’d be absolutely perfect.

  • Little_Olive

That romper is tragic, if for no other reason because of one of the fugliest exposed zippers in history. We are tempted to give it a pass because Miss Lupita is so fabulous, but imagine it on Kim K (where it really belongs). Ugh.

The length of the second dress kills the whole look, right down to the 4th-of-July-Barbie shoes.

  • MilaXX

If it wasn’t for the shoe in the second shot, I’d have given this a double werq. That hair+winged eye combo ins pure perfection.

  • Upon viewing the first look in its entirety, I exclaimed aloud “Good shoes!” That romper looks so much cuter than it has any right to, and it’s all her. I die for the dress in the second look, but her hair gives me life again. Love the shoe color, hate the shape and fabric.

  • SewingSiren

Not a fan of rompers or formal shorts. But I do love the alligator print on her. Love the second look , except for the textile the shoe is made of, if it had just been electric blue leather it would be perfect.

    • 3boysful

I generally hate the jumpsuit/romper, mainly because practical me imagines trying to use the restroom without baptizing parts of an expensive outfit in the potty. This, however, is working for me.

  • LeelaST

I can’t even stand typing the word “R—–” Adult women were not meant to wear infant-inspired clothing. It’s actually worse than the dreaded jumpsuit. As for the Kors dress – I can’t get behind the strapless/bare midriff/front slit/length situation. Maybe it’s just the shoes.

  • Jacob Bowen

I would LOVE the first look without sleeves, but I still appreciate, but GUUURRRLLLLL GET OVER YOUR LOVE OF THOSE BLUE SHOES! Or actually find an outfit that they GO WITH!

  • IamstillAnonymous

When you read her Spirit Awards acceptance speech, what she is wearing becomes minutiae. This young woman is remarkable.

    • MilaXX

Currently listening to Patton Oswald’s opening speech on youtube

  • Evan

LOVE her hair and makeup in the second look.

  • a_liking

oh, the second look is TO DIE, except for those awful awful shoes.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I am always amazed at her hair. Someone does an amazing job of giving her such a variety of hairstyles while it always remains so short. (I have short hair and it pretty much always looks the same.) Who would have though that a long-sleeved, zipped up romper could look so good?

  • MilaXX

Kind of off topic, but BET is airing Mahogany today. As I watched that opening scene with her fashion show, I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of commentary the uncles would have had.

  • Blair Sylvester

I have loved a lot of her big events looks. But I don’t like either of these looks. She looks great despite them. That romper may be the worst work Stella has done yet .

  • yethica

What is with these SHOES?! Her stylist needs to get a stylist for Lupita’s feet. Seriously…. steal some of Blanchett’s footwear. Just… anything is better than the Payless nonsense she has on her feet most of the time.

  • talk about independent spirit, this girl’s got it. the kors is a bit long for her, and let us not speak of the shoes, but no mind. she’s the bomb!

  • MaggieMae

She is killing it in the first look. GORGEOUS. That could be my favorite hair to date on Miss Lupita. Thank you, dear Uncles, for posting the link to the Vanity Fair article on stylists, celebrities, and fashion + career. She is WORKING her career by wearing the hell out of these clothes and bringing it to these public appearances! Brava!

  • KendraMR

That. Hair. Ted Gibson is a hair styling gawd!

    • kerryev

Is that who does her hair? He is such a doll.

  • ThaliaMenninger

That romper is insanely adorable on her. LOVE.

  • quiltrx

Will someone get all the blue shoes away from this woman? I want to hate the romper, and I think it’s that magic that gals like Cate and Tilda possess…Lupita can make just about anything work. I kinda wish she had worn a big ol’ necklace with the second look, but still looks great.
And I LOVE that her stylist finds so many different ways for her to wear her hair.

  • Maev

I have to disagree on the romper. No, just no. And I have to admit…I sighed when I looked it at, all “this is the one you break out the good shoes for? THIS?”

  • Qitkat

I’ve even got Mr. Qitkat on board with the Lupita love! Gawd, she’s gorgeous. The blue satin shoes are to laugh at, they are in an orbit of their own.

  • lesmaha

Can’t believe she is making a Stella McCartney Romper WERQ!! She is truly a goddess of fashion.

  • susan6

Does the Kors outfit need a necklace? (Along with different shoes of course) Can’t believe that anyone could make a Stella McCartney alligator print shorts romper work, but….it works!

  • KateMaryC

I hope this doesn’t come across as mean, but her legs look better in that romper than in anything else she has worn. She wears ladylike knee-length dresses, but her legs REALLY shine when we can see more of them. FIERCE.

  • GillianHolroyd

That romper is so perfect, no words are needed.

  • Dagney

    The shoes!!! WTF?!

  • marlie

First look: perfection, head-to-toe, including the shorts/onsie from Stella. And the second look is nice, but I don’t like the dress quite as much, and those shoes should be set on fire. But that HAIR, people. LOVE. IT.

  • demidaemon

I hate both pairs of shoes. Sorry, Lupita, your footwear choices still need work.

I also surprisingly love the first look, despite a combination that I should hate: Stella McCartney romper. Amazing what a wearer can do with a garment, no?

  • Gatto Nero

Sorry, but “romper” and “Stella McCartney” in the same sentence is an automatic OUT.
The Kors dress is killer, though. The shoes make me weep.

  • Bozhi

Love the Stella. Her hair and makeup look great in the Kors, but I do not like that dress.

  • She does love her weird cut-outs, doesn’t she? But she can pull them off.

  • Pablo

Gurl you are on fire, LOVE the first look

  • V No Privacy

Nope, hate both outfits and the blue shoes. #StellaMcCartneyHatesWomen

the makeup and hair can stay, as usual.

  • MarissaLG

I just want to give a quick shout-out to her makeup artist. Flawless looks EVERY time.

  • Boulderista

words that should never go together: “Stella McCartney romper.” It’s cute on Lupita but still it’s a ROMPER.

Her shoes and purse always remind me of what I think of as southern-lady-church-style … all she needs is a pair of white gloves and she’d be set. (Of course I’ve never even visited the south much less attended church there so my idea of what Sunday morning looks like is highly suspect but it includes matchy shoes, purse and maybe a hat in pastels or jewel tones).

  • KT

I love both of these looks so much!! Just when I thought she couldn’t get more adorable — sheesh. The blue shoes are definitely a record scratch (and that hem is a little too long), but otherwise – totally fabulous. I really wish I could wear both of these looks, but I would definitely look like a troll, especially in comparison to Miss Lu.

  • e jerry powell

MIss Thing just WINS. ALL THE THINGS.
