Jared Leto in Balmain at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Posted on March 02, 2014

You’d think, if you’ve read our thoughts on guystyle for any length of time, that we’d hate this:

Instead, we love it – and we’re discovering a new-found respect for his style chops.

We’ll start with this: the “I’m having my period during a school trip” shirt tied around the waist is an affectation, and a particularly silly one at that, for the red carpet. That needs to go away immediately. But everything else looks really fabulous on him. And he’s doing that thing we always urge stars to do if they don’t want to dress conventionally for the RC or don’t want to be forced into wearing costumes on the RC: take your own style and ramp it up to red carpet levels. You wanna be a rock star AND pick up an Oscar? Then you get yourself a Balmain jacket to start yourself off and then simply pair it with good pieces that won’t fight it. Top it off with a rather silly (but still kinda fabulous) scarf and a killer pair of boots and you look put together, high end, and ready to receive your award. We wonder how much of this red carpet brilliance we’re seeing is him figuring out how to dress like a nominee or a savvy stylist figuring out how to scale up his natural style to the red carpet. Either way, it’s working. Can’t wait to see what he does tonight. If he ties a shirt around his waist we reserve the right to point and laugh.

  • This works for me. Except for the scarf and the fact that he is on the red (sort of) carpet. It’s the 90s done by one who was there.

    • ConnieBV

It would have hit a total home run for me if only he had layered the shirt under the jacket.

    • what not

Exactly. I was thinking “He looks like the 90s–but then, the 90s were good to him.”

  • Monabel

Jacket is even better in blue.

    • VicD

If he’d worn it in blue, it would have made his eyes pop so spectacularly that it would have been too hard to take. Got to respect his restraint 😉

      • Chickadeep

He’s only thinking of the children. And by “children,” I mean us.

    • stellamaris73

J’adore the blue. In part because it’s so unexpected.

  • “Balmain biker jacket” is the kind of thing that offends me about fashion sometimes.

  • NMMagpie

    That jacket is spectacular.

    • xmixiex

      Yes yes it is.

  • Patrick Scott

I’m just glad it looks like he finally washed his hair.

    • Kristin McNamara

THIS. I’ve never been so in awe of (or jealous of) that mane of his before. Looks pretty great to me.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Biker Jesus chic…

    • VicD

You win the internet for the morning.

  • Youbeguilemenot

    His eyes are mesmerizing.

  • MilaXX

Looks like he got his hair touched up for tonight. I have no idea why but this is working for me. I would kill to own those boots.

  • He’s got the perfect Anglo Jesus look going on with his head. Future role?

    • not_Bridget

Tom Mison rocks that look in Sleepy Hollow. But he wears a wig….

I’m old enough to remember the hippie boys–some of whom did look really fine.

  • SRQkitten

I kind of love that he’s staying true to who he is while ramping it up for the award season froofra. Hope he wins tonight, his Rayon was heartbreaking.

  • Courtenay P

Oh I so would. Again and again. Werq Jared.

  • ashtangajunkie

The shirt around his waist is so Jordan Catalano that I could just die. I think he looks quite perfect here. Minus the shirt around his waist. (I mean, I loved Jordan Catalano, but I’m not blind.)

    • Vickiefantastico

I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I see the shirt around his waist as a nod to his Jordan Catalano past. I kind of found it so intriguing that it makes me like it.

  • Beto

Love this (kinda 60’s felling to me) biker look excepto for that silly camisa roja de leñador in his waist. I’m torn with that scarf but other than that he owns that red carpet. I WANT those boots. Oh and I want HIM in MY bed. Period.

    • Little_Olive

Hey! a fellow native spanish speaker (naturally typed excepto instead of “except”)? I too hate the camisa roja de leñador… but I actually should have swapped some plaid thing of the sort for the scarf, which I find too echarpe-like.

      • Beto

I’m a native spanish speaker and I typed “excepto” in purpose. You know, the globalisation and stuff 🙂

    • demidaemon

Are you sharing? because then I would be okay with letting you have him for awhile.

      • Beto

nothankyouverymuch, I’m a *bit* selfish. Just a *bit*

  • Flavia Pantoja

I love everything but the red shirt around the waist. And I think the scarf makes all the difference. Love it.

  • elemspbee

    ❤️ this look.

  • ShaoLinKitten

All I can look at is that face. My god he is a beautiful man, even under all that hair.

    • Chickadeep

Face, face, beauty, face. He really is quite startlingly good-looking. And weirdly ageless, too. It’s shocking how long ago he was on MSCL, and yet it might as well be yesterday for all the natural aging process he’s apparently NOT DOING.

      • ShaoLinKitten

The Jordan Catalano character was so iconic. Every nerdy girl like Angela had her own Jordan Catalano. That show was so poignant and real, and a lot of it came from his perfect rendering of THAT BOY. And you’re right, even when he tries to hide it under profligate facial hair, he still has that angelic face we all loved so well in MSCL. He’s not even my type– I like my men a bit more rugged– but it’s impossible not to swoon over those anime character sized eyes. Whew.

    • Jacob Bowen

Agreed! Gosh, if he rid himself of that long hair (my turn off) he would be PERFECT.

      • demidaemon

I find long hair to be a turn on, so I think we’d be at odds there. However, I not averse to well-groomed shorter hair either.

  • VicD

He’s true to himself. I love that about him.

  • Chickadeep

Serving up Jordan Catalano-slash-Jesus Christ Realness and I love it. ::: sigh ::: I don’t love long hair OR beards and yet he is so very pretty to look at.

  • xmixiex

The flannel around the waist is dumb, the rest is killer. This is near ewan level style.

  • Janet B

Love the jacket and boots, even his hair looks nice.
    Bravo, anonymous stylist.

  • AmeliaEve

    Waif-y perfection

  • Frank_821

    I love those boots. fabulous!

  • lalahartma

    Hate the stupid tied-on flannel.

  • jonnyf8

I think his hair might have gone a little darker for awards weekend. I think he is fabulous.

  • Either the scarf or the jacket around the waist, certainly not both. But I see what he’s doing here, and even if I don’t like it, it makes sense.

  • kmk05

I think the hair ties it all together. Ignoring that hip shirt entirely, I actually wish he had either closed the jacket or layered it with a different top (it’s too much black from head to toe), but the zippers at the boots and on the jacket are a nice way of breaking the outfit up.

  • Danielle

I love a good man ombré. He should give Kate Mara tips.

    • ShaoLinKitten

      Hombre ombre.

  • decormaven

The flannel looped around his waist is a great representation of Bill Cunningham’s recent photo montage on “Forever Plaid” and the rebirth of grunge. Fingers crossed for Jared tonight!

  • LittleKarnak

Ugh…..I just want to see him show up tonight in a perfectly fitted classic tux……with clean hair….is that too much to ask?

  • understateddiva

I’m annoyed by many things here, the flannel of course, but the boots are pissing me off, too. They have that weird wrinkly look of brand-new leather that’s meant to look old. Yet he’s trying to work some sort of biker dude/nineties band thing that would require an actual, lived-in boot. I’m just not buying it, and I’m usually right there on the Jared train. I think this look could be totally improved by going high-low. Every piece is a designer take on an everyday classic.

  • formerlyAnon

Of course I like it. For oh, about 20 years of my life, all a guy needed was long hair and a lavish scarf to have me eyeing him speculatively. Avidly, even. Of course, most of those guys were higher maintenance than I, which doomed the enterprise from the start, but oh well.

I wouldn’t have even had to disappear with this one for the 10 or 15 minutes of private . . . conversation to know it was doomed. Everything on him looks new, which is fine for the RC but screams poseur in a dark bar/party/backstage hallway.

    • Sarah

I agree. I don’t like it for that reason. It looks like a pile of clichés he hasn’t got the chops to make un-cliché. But then I remember he’s on the RC, so he’s just exactly right for that, I guess.

    • quiltrx

Ah, those enterprises were always doomed, weren’t they? Sigh, but they were brief bits of fun…

  • Nexli B

The ombre hair is killing me, all I can’t picture is how many hours he spent in a salon chair getting it done. And the ultra-macho scruffy biker fantasy is ruined for me. Dangit.

  • pookiesmom

My extreme hate for that stupid, stupid plaid flannel is at war with my love for everything else.

  • tonibaloney

His eyes are glowing. Is it wrong that I would do anything he told me to do?

  • thecitysleeps

His hair is so flawless. The jacket is nice too.

  • boweryboy

    I hate the Jesus hair.

  • ballerinawithagun

If only that plaid flannel were a real kilt!!!

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

Uncles, when I saw the shirt I had the same exact thought as well as the experience.

  • d4divine

He is is probably the only forty year old man that can rock Balmain quite so hard. I bow to you Jared Leto.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

That plaid shirt around the waist HAS GOT TO GO. Otherwise, I’m really feeling this look in a very good way.

  • He is perfection! I have a lot of respect for a guy in his forties who presents himself like this! Killa!

  • When I saw this last night i was hoping it was a kilt – but no. And props to him for having good-looking long man hair. Most guys look like they never heard of conditioner.

  • Lilyana_F

    The boots are everything!

  • He is wearing the most polished version of his look. Johnny Depp could take some tips. Love the scarf, could lose the flannel. Owning a Balmain jacket is officially on my bucket list (I have been flirting with the idea for a while.)

    • Megan Kennedy

I think Johnny Depp might have just passed the point where one can get away with looks like this.

      • I think Johnny is well past this look (considering he basically rocked it on 21 Jump Street nearly thirty years ago), but he could use some advice on translating his personal style to the red carpet in a way that looks fashionable and venue-appropriate.

  • fiddlecub

I usually don’t like his look, but this is so put together that I can’t hate.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Those eyes just stare right into you. But, yeah, the flannel shirt needs to go. Love the hair, and I’m not such a fan of long hair on men.

  • Betsy

    Rock and Roll Jesus.

  • the shirt is just stupid. what, is he gonna take off the jacket and put on the shirt at some point? why? will he then tie the balmain around his waist and sit on it all evening. anyways, he’is the guy i lusted after in my twenties. long pretty hair, soulful eyes, skinny rock and roll god.

  • desertsweetpea

He is so so pretty. Shame about the clothes.

  • Lisa_Co

The plaid shirt tied around his waist is a bridge too far.

  • fananafanafophalec

I think like 80% of his charm is comes from the fact that he has long beautiful hair and clearly WASHES IT regularly

  • quiltrx

See, this is a guy I would totally have gone for around 1990. The flannel is a Grunge bridge too far, but I think he looks gorgeous and very true to himself.
It doesn’t hurt that that’s one of the most awesome motorcycle jackets I’ve ever seen. Mama wants. 🙂

  • lillyvonschtupp

    Who is Jordan Catalano?

  • Imasewsure

I’m only a year in to this party but I absolutely love this guy. Fly that rocker freak flag Oscar boy!!

  • marlie

Ditch the shirt around the waist, and this would be an outstanding look. He looks amazing!

  • demidaemon

Yeah, that shirt is all kinds of stupid. Edit that out, and you’ve got RC rocker style.

  • Gatto Nero

Great, great jacket and scarf. Boots are borderline laughable, but I’ll give them to him.
The flannel shirt, yes, has to go.

  • kittentoes

Maybe he’s doing the shirt thing because he had a pedi appointment, but the parking lot was muddy, and he slipped and fell, getting mud all over his butt. Unfortunately, despite the dedicated efforts of his best friend and some paper towels (always carry a roll in your car), it still looked like he had shat himself. So he tied his shirt around his waist to hide the mud, and tied his tattered dignity around his shoulders and sailed on to the red carpet. Maybe.
    Otherwise there’s really no excuse.

  • omg_dora

I hate his hair, hate the shirt tied around the waist, and most of all, hate his eternal puppy-dog eyes (“I’m a tortured artist, guys!”). I just find him an unbearable poser.

  • KES4K

Nope nope nope. I hate the ‘try-hard’-ness of it all. It’s akin to Johnny Depp’s gay wind chime aesthetic, but with an additional veneer of “I’m pretending I just threw this on with noooooooo idea it was a $1500 jacket”. If there were a sense of fun to it, or a knowing high-end/low-end mash-up, then sure. But if I were a dude who could spend six months’ of an average person’s salary on my outfit for one awards show, personally I’d feel an obligation to WITFU a little, no?

  • Pablo

Hate the scarf, not crazy about the boots but that is one beautiful jacket

  • supri_supri

    Jordan Catalano revisited!

  • Patrick Cleary

I’m glad I don’t live on the West Coast, because I would have been arrested for trying to break into this event and stealing his boots.

    • Suse

      Me, too!

  • AvaLehra

I would just like to add that he is 42 and looks amazing.

  • JauntyJohn

He was born to wear that jacket.
And I am in the minority liking the pop of color from the flannel tied. I’m going to chalk it up to an interesting deployment of fashion, irony and a nod to yesterday. Men have fewer choices I think the scarf and the shirt look… I guess “formal cool” is the term I want, even though it’s not quite a term. But maybe it should be, for the rocker/serious actors among us?

  • KT

I love this look, although that also may be because this is how I look most days – sans flannel shirt and beard. I am honored to say that Jared Leto and I could practically be twinsies.

  • Kimberlini

Agree! The jacket and the boots are absolutely fab but lose the red shirt.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I look like this every day in appropriate weather – minus the plaid shirt

  • Kikishua
