Emma Roberts Wears Her Hipster Costume in Beverly Hills

Posted on March 17, 2014

The hipster affectations tend to come off way too, well… affected with her, mainly because they popped up suddenly. But if you took away the <bitchy> 2007-ironic  frames</bitchy>, we’d love this straight up and down.

Although, granted, the gardening booties are more than a little questionable. Cute coat, though; right?

  • Those are far too pristine to be gardening boots.

    • Dam_Angel

Go Go boots! Had a pair in a time a long ago.

      • charlotte

Walk walk boots in her case…

  • BlairBear

that blonde hair is really not good on her. Also those frames are way to big for her face

  • elemspbee

love this all the way down to the white booties, except for the tennis socks.

    • gabbilevy

The pink edging on the socks is the one major WTF on an otherwise pretty cute and cohesive outfit.

  • KinoEye

HAHAHAHAHA. Emma Roberts in her hipster costume. Still cute, though she’s on my irrational hate list for sure.

    • Ceur

It’s not that irrational. But yes, she’s like the opposite of Rashida (whose freckles I would probably polish if she asked me too) on both the charm scale and the would-want-as-BFF-scale.

      • KinoEye

Yeah, after I typed that, I thought “my dislike has justification, dammit!” I dunno… anyone who bites their boyfriend multiple times, goes out dressed like that and is related to Julia Roberts is perfectly worthy of my rational dislike. You’re right.

  • Terrible shirt. It looks cheap and scratchy.

    • twigg

      Forever 21 clearance rack cheap.

  • Sophie

Dislike the coat. I think it looks dated, and not in a good way (mostly due to the pattern on the fabric). Otherwise, she looks cute.

    • hyperionic

It does look like it belongs on a couch from the 80s.

  • Janet B

The coat, glasses and shoes look like a bad costume.

    • kimmeister

      Like three totally different costumes.

  • KT

Okay it was really warm in LA all weekend and even got up to 90 degrees yesterday, so I really don’t understand the coat deployment at all.

This outfit looks pretty shitty to my eyes, sorry. The top and jeans are pure juniors department, the boots are weird and wrong for the outfit, I HATE that I can see her socks, the glasses look fake, and none of it really goes together. The coat is the best part, but again, there was NO need for it… big pass.

    • KES4K

To pile on…the top is juniors’ department circa 1997, aka the year “Contempo Casuals” peaked. And pretty sure the socks were standard cheerleader-uniform issue that same year.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

I logged in just to agree with you. I couldn’t even form opinions on the fashion merit of her outfit because the only thing I could think was “When were these photos taken? There is NO WAY she was wearing that this weekend!” I’m very impressed that you were able to move past the initial incredulity to break down why her outfit doesn’t work. Because it doesn’t.

Also, I’ve decided that if I were ever a really rich celebrity, I would own all kinds of (prescription) glasses so that I could have the luxury of waking up in the morning and deciding, “Hmm, I think I’ll be a hipster today.”

  • MilaXX

Her hipster look is always one piece too far. The glasses work much better when she take off the coat.

  • MarissaLG

Hate that lace top. It looks like one of those “will never wrinkle” plasticky shirts they sell at kiosks at the mall.

  • sagecreek

Ain’t no one hip enough to wear white patent leather boots. Unless they’re ice skating.

    • Sabin

      Or Nancy Sinatra.

      • sagecreek

Well, of course! I apologize. Brain misfire.

    • twigg

      Or Sally Draper.

  • Anna

I am similarly bespectacled, so the glasses actually bother me the least. The rest is all very Hipster Handbook.

  • heuristicvalue

    Is her purse empty?

That shirt looks like a horrible incarnation of something I wore in 1994.

    • Alyssa

It doesn’t look like there’s anything in there! Disadvantage of carrying a free mesh purse…it makes it even more noticable that you’re just being paid to carry it!

  • vickilu

That is the best coat I’ve seen in a long time.

  • When you have the Roberts Cheekbones, you don’t need focus pulling eye wear. Love, The Girl Who Needs Focus Pulling Eye Wear

  • another_laura

I love how she’s just like us, she parks her own car and pays for parking, she doesn’t work hard at her look, she does a little shopping. In BH and with paps, of course. Reminds me of my Saturday morning errand running, for sure!

And the outfit is just not good. The booties, oy, the booties.

  • CeeQ

“Yes, very cute coat but those shoes are super fug.” – I sniffed to my just-came-in-the-mail TLo Book gifts!

(…I’ve named the ageing ladystar in a turban in the drawing, Edina Petals. Because she always wanted a drag queen-ish name, to go with the turbans she always knew she would end up wearing. Thanks TLo, loving the BK Gifts!)

    • Qitkat

Cute drag queen name. I got the same drawing, mine came at the end of last week. I’ll have to name mine now too 😉
Adding my thanks to TLo for the BK gifts. I suspect they will end up sharing a space with my Tim Gunn bobblehead.

      • Sarah

I got mine on Saturday! My fellow brought in the mail, and he said “Those blog guys you like mailed you something! Did you enter a contest or something?” I told him they sent me a present, special. The card and magnet are now living on my fridge-collage, with middle placement. Which = total respect.

        • Qitkat

My husband always gets the mail, and he came in waving the envelope, “You got something from Tom & Lorenzo! What’s going on?” Me “Oh, it came! I’ve been expecting this! It’s something special for Bitter Kittens who pre-ordered the book.”

        • CeeQ

My husband brought in the mail and said without skipping a beat “Tom & Lorenzo sent you something”……because TLo is a household name in our household hahaha

          • Sarah

Heh I just refer to it as “The Blog” because I don’t really mess with any others. He knows what I mean. i.e. “On The Blog today we were talking about X celeb’s outfit” or “I saw him wearing X on The Blog and he looked so much better than he does in this movie”

      • kimmeister

        There are Tim Gunn bobbleheads?!?

        • Qitkat

Back in the early days, when this blog was Project Rungay, there were giveaway contests with random winners, and I was lucky enough to get a TG bobblehead. It talks too, in his voice!

          • Jacob Bowen

I would pay SO much money on eBay for a Tim Gunn bobble head…especially if it said, “Make it Work!”

          • Qitkat

Hmm, just how much would you pay?

It says, “I can’t want you to succeed more than you do!” “Carry on!” “Fab-u-lous! (laughing)” and of course “Make it work!”

It’s really kind of cute, Tim is dressed all in black with his arms folded, grinning, wearing glasses. It says TIM GUNN Quality, Taste & Style.(two lines) on the front of the base. As I recall the giveaway had something to do with Emmett McCarthy’s store in NYC, as the back of the base says Emmett McCarthy EMc2 (two lines). Maybe he still has some in a dusty storage room.

So I went and grabbed it off the shelf, where it has been sitting in dusty awesomeness for years, and at first, I couldn’t get it to talk. I had to keep pressing the button, til it finally unstuck itself, or something, and got it to say all the phrases. But you know, hearing him laugh got a little bit creepy after the fifth time! I think he’s just tired after all this time.

On second thought, I might just hold onto him a little longer. Sorry 😉

          • Jacob Bowen

Oh I have no expectations of buying yours, but in the future if I ever see one on eBay I will totally snatch it up/

  • marlie

I’m not loving any of this. I don’t like the pattern on the coat, I have a visceral hated for lace tops, and the booties are hiddy. I also wonder if the box is partially open in the shopping bag just so the paps can get a glimpse of what she just bought.

  • Kitten Mittons

“Yeah, I’d rather be a hippy than a hipster, what!”

  • Aidan B

Loathe the boots, am guilty of not loathing the glasses as much as I should. None of this looks current, which is, I guess, the whole point.

  • deelup

Stylish or not, I die for the Elvis boots. Long live the King.

  • frannyprof

May I point out that it’s 80+degrees in LA.

  • pattyw

That looks like an Anthropologie bag and a gift box. Oh, wait, Emma bought me a present! I’ll try to act surprised.

  • Imasewsure

Preemptive gasp but I”m not really a coat person (although this one is super cute). Really like the jeans/shirt/boots combo better. Hipster glasses are cute and hey no pretentious hat!!

  • snarkykitten

Those glasses look fake as shit. Why the hell do people who don’t need glasses wear them? You don’t look cool or intelligent. You look like a bloody tool.
(My apologies if Ms Roberts actually needs corrective lenses)

    • decormaven

      Maybe they’re Clark Kent glasses.

  • amanda siegelson

    white leather beatle boots??? ok!

  • Tanya Wade

When you see a hipster in the wild, approach it slowly before you administer the smackdown.
(One thing for sure – those ain’t progressives or she couldn’t see her phone).

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Offer it a pour-over artisanal latte first, then move in from behind with the nerf bat to swat it.

  • ojosazules

The coat and shirt are not hitting it off.

  • Kent Roby

Yeah, there’s a bit of an affectation here, but she looks good to me. I’m just glad her boyfriend hasn’t influenced her to wear a dozen barrettes and a factory-worn Mickey t-shirt with holes in it.

  • fursa_saida

Nope, none of this is working for me. I’m reaching the point of wanting to shave her head, I hate that hair color so much.

  • Jessica Freeman

It’s not great and then….scroll down horror…white booties.

  • Clash D

That is SO NOT her hair color, which offends my aesthetic more than the white boots, which are also bad.

  • uprightcitizen

Not surprised she ditched the coat. It’s been 80 degrees in SoCal for several days. Even early in the morning, that’s too much coat.

  • Sunraya

She looks too nice to be a hipster. My son’s hipster friends, they look really ratty and they all buy their clothes at the Salvation Army in Brooklyn. Most clothes don’t fit too well either! 🙂

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    I love the boots.

  • Celebrities! They’re just like us! Look, they even feed quarters into parking meters ALL BY THEMSELVES!

PS: hate the boots, love the glasses

  • RuthGo

I really really want that coat.

  • VicD

    Irrational hate list.

  • Call me Bee

    She looks straight outta Seattle.

  • JynxTheCat

I dunno how they decide to make happen but they have been trying to make this one happen for a long time.

  • quiltrx

    Her entire head is pretentious.
    Love the coat, though.

  • It kind of suits her, but those booties are unforgiveable.

  • Bernadette

Cute coat, yes and I like the lace top, but no to the visible bra.

  • webslice33

cute coat but i loved it more when she took it off..

  • ktr33

I actually like the booties. Giving a Courreges vibe.
