Emma Roberts at the Christian Dior Fall 2014 Fashion Show

Posted on March 06, 2014

There’s something very ’90s Winona Ryder about this look; like she should be getting on the back of a motorcycle with a pre-elderly gay windchime Johnny Depp, back when you could cut yourself on his cheekbones.

It’s a real shame that skirt had to go and get tricky on us, because we were very close to loving this to the point of cheering it. We still think it’s cute, but the unexpected side panty shot doesn’t do anything but distract, as far as we’re concerned.

What a fab little bag that is. But less conventional shoes would’ve been more fun here, we’re thinking. The hair and makeup look a little harsh to us. And we just can’t stop obsessing over how weird that skirt is.

It’s a cute-at-first-glance look that gets less cute the longer you drink in the details. Keep the jacket and bag, start over with everything else.

That color red didn’t work in her dress the other night and it’s not working here on her face.

  • Lori

Scroll around fug. That’s a new one.

  • “Pre-elderly gay windchime” always makes me laugh.

  • Danielle

Why are all the young ladystars hacking their hair off? I don’t understand.

  • Lucía Gavello

/&%$···&)()((=?=….. I’m sorry, I was drooling on my keyboard at the sight of that jacket.

  • KinoEye

That jacket is badass, and demands better hair than pure WASP mom at the PTA. Pre-elderly gay windchime… awesome.

    • Anna

Couldn’t agree more on the hair. Send this to Rihanna, she’ll know what to do with it.

  • another_laura

I think I see what she’s trying to do, a tough / soft thing? But it’s a failure. Hate that skirt. And that lip is just wrong.

    • Rhonda Shore

hideous skirt. too bad. Skinny black jeans would have been fantastic with this jacket.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The skirt gives the looks of the entire table cloth tucked into the waistband – horrid! Otherwise I was liking this too!

  • 3boysful

Adorable from the waist-up, and I love the shoes. The . . . skirt? . . . is too full. It would be dowdy if it were actually a skirt.

  • MilaXX

Neither the hair or the lipstick work well with her skintone. That jacket is all sorts of awesome. I want her to start over with and pair it with w pencil skirt and moto boots or at least a better shoe than what she is wearing.

  • Kent Roby

She totally had me until the granny panties.

  • Latin Buddy

Except, Winnona Ryder embodied style, poise, attitude, and that charisma that this girl can’t even pretend to do.

  • In_Stitches

The skirt is a bit too ‘Nun-ish’ for the rest of the look without the panty-peek, so I’m on board with it. Sure, it’s weird, but she’s trying to be a hipster-y lady and I don’t think she’s 25 yet, so I’ll give her a pass.

  • Mothra

Love the hair, the jacket and the little boxy purse. Everything else can go in the goodwill bin. Including whomever painted those lips on her.

  • Vicky

I find it difficult to put into words but to me she just looks so out of place in that outfit, as if she was dressed to look like someone else. You can tell that this is new territory for her style-wise, and it’s not working out for her imho.

  • alyce1213

She gets to go to Paris fashion week? She bores me to tears. Great jacket, though.

  • Betsy

There is a party up top and a streetwalker’s funeral below. Hot mess! I actually think the hair and lipstick look kind of cute but maybe it’s because I’ve been rendered numb by the clothes.

  • formerlyAnon

Knee high Docs, that’s what she needs for shoes.

  • demidaemon

I want the skirt to be sleeker and less tricky. Then, this would actually be near perfection.

    • Sarah

Yeah, I think the shape of the skirt is dowdy and long-ish, sheer cutout aside. I think the jacket calls for a non-puffy skirt. Or if you’re gonna do one, make it a skater length.

      • demidaemon

        Skater length?

        • Sarah

Above knee but not super mini. Not like, actual figure skaters, which would be VERY short.

          • demidaemon

I definitely see with what you are saying and can now say that, yes, this is exactly what she needs.

  • holdstillnow

That bag is giving me jr high flashbacks. I’m not a fan. I can’t see the handles very well, but I’m imagining chain link encased in clear vinyl tubing.

  • jw_ny

“Hello, I’m Allison [Vernon-Williams]. I used to be a Square but then I met Cry Baby and my world changed.”

    • decormaven

      She’s no Wanda Woodward.

  • mjude

I was liking it until the skirt. ugh. I do love the jacket

  • Waist up I love it. Another centimetre of dark roots and she can join my Bananarama tribute band.

  • Skippymom1

Those shoes! Yummy. The skirt did go wonky, even the hem, but the rest of it I really really like.

  • Gatto Nero

I was onboard with the girly, luxe skirt paired with the moto jacket until I saw the sheer panel. (WHY??)

  • Sara Brams-Miller

Just switch the skirt and she’d be perfection.

  • Aurumgirl

It’s like the table cloth didn’t reach all the way around. Sigh. This girl really is so pretty and I keep thinking, each time I see her, that she deserves a much, much better stylist.

  • NMMagpie

At first I was thinking: “At least she’s clothed under that jacket…” And then I saw the skirt. Sigh.

    Wrong red, too.

  • Akemi

Wow, that is a lot of makeup.

  • The jacket was clearly meant to belong to me, but the whole look comes off as so calculated that it gives me the ick. I just don’t believe that Emma is this girl. Cute purse, though.

  • Grumpy Girl

I realize she has frightening roots here, but this is one of the first times I’ve seen her blonde that my first thought wasn’t the horror of the hair color. (She had such lovely chestnut hair; why would she want it to be garish blonde?) I continue to believe that blonde does not at all suit her, but it seems less horrifying in this outfit.

  • Jecca2244

one of the hardest things in life is accepting that red lipstick might not be for you (or at least for you a lot of the time)

  • melanie0866

CUTE CUTE CUTE. Want to be her.

  • Alyssa

Love the jacket. I see potential in the bag, but the handle seems clear which reminds me of jelly shoes for some reason. That is not her color lipstick…

  • Dagney

    huh, kinda……liking it.

  • kimmeister

I didn’t like the shoes on Kate Mara, I don’t like them on Emma either. I don’t hate the red lipstick on her like everyone else does, at least it’s a blue-red and not an orange-red. I agree with TLo that the jacket and bag are the only pieces worth keeping.

  • save_the_hobbit

Yes yes yes. I just want her. I think she looks hot in anything.

  • pattyw

Considering her father’s and aunt’s striking looks, it never ceases to amaze me how this particular Roberts turned out so utterly bland and forgettable.

  • Annistella

The makeup is too harsh and ‘done’. Emma Roberts is on my ‘dislike irrationally’ list. Objectively, she is the more demure of the younger lady stars, but everytime I see her I get the same feeling I got in highschool when the Mean Girls were around.

  • deelup

    On Wednesdays we wear black.

  • OK…a black leather motorcycle jacket and a fifties inspired mid-calf swing skirt ripped up the side? Looks like a remake of Grease…end of story! And that bag is soooo trite!

  • Qitkat

Did you know you can buy a very very tiny version of that jacket that fits on a greeting card? Me neither, til today, when I bought one for my youngest son’s April birthday. It has zippers and everything! Mostly I’m so proud of myself that I bought a card this freaking early. Now watch me misplace it…

  • AnneElliot

Oh, honey. Burn that skirt, and pack up that jacket and send it Evan Rachel Wood (or, better still, send it to ME). And that hair is just sad.

  • Taylor Vaught

Elderly gay windchime is still the most hilarious thing I’ve ever read on this site. I die.

  • quiltrx

This is better than her usual, but that is a seriously effed-up skirt.

  • marlie

I really like this, but that sheer panel on the skirt is a huge needle-scratch. The jacket is great, and her hair and makeup are fine. I like the red lip, but maybe something that wasn’t quite so harsh – and didn’t make her skin seem SO pale – would have been a better fit.

  • GillianHolroyd

She looks like a doll that someone else has dressed. She’s not really *wearing* those clothes.

  • kategs

and shorten the sleeves on that jacket!

  • pop_top

Is it me, or should she just not be blonde? I feel like she is so washed out with it that she needs a red/deep brown/strawberry blonde even.
On topic, I really like the shoes.

  • I’m not sure that she can sell it. I could even get behind the skirt, but she just doesn’t look comfortable (however she really feels).

  • JynxTheCat

Not bad considering the source of course. But the skirt does ruin.

  • LeelaST

This look got worse and worse as I scrolled down. Nothing seems to go with anything else.

  • I actually like this. That jacket is killer and I like it paired with the skirt. That bag looks fun.

  • mjmiller77

this outfit can’t quite figure out what it wants to be when it grows up… motorcycle mama meets schoolmarm meets pole dancer. It’s too bad – the jacket and the purse are great.

  • imspinningaround

I would cut not just one but many bitches for that jacket.

  • peachy

love the jacket, just not on her. she needs a li’l….erm….. assistance.

  • H2olovngrl

This girl’s make up is always…wrong, somehow.
