GTNYD: Jena Malone in Roksanda Ilincic at the Vanity Fair’s Young Hollywood Event

Posted on February 26, 2014

Oh, Girl, that is so Not Your Hair. We’re going to need a minute to get past it before we can even look at your outfit.

We’ll give her credit for this: it’s pretty much perfect for her hairstyle. But we’re afraid this pantsuit avec cutout and gigantic flounce is just a bit too much look for this poor girl to handle. We feel bad. She’s clearly a risk-taker in her style. And to be clear here, we actually like this garment, but we think it takes a very different person to wear it.  She just doesn’t have the presence or the physicality to pull something like this off.

Girl, That’s Not Your Dress Look. Ship this off to Marisa Tomei. Let’s get you in some Miu Miu or something, mkay?

I totally respect her for trying this, though.

  • save_the_hobbit

    I didn’t know There’s Something About Mary hair was a desirable style…

    • Rhonda Shore

Speaking of hair, she as the SAME EXACT bone structure as Robert Smith. They could do a separated at birth.

      • kimmeister

Robert Smith of The Cure? He’s got a few decades on her . . .

        • Rhonda Shore

Her big brother then…look at their faces side by side from when he was her age. It’s uncanny.

  • madge

aw, i really like this on her!

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

If the hair was sleeker (and less crunchy), I would like this a lot more.

    • or just a little wavy!

      • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Any kind of production other than “I’ll put all my hair to this side of the head and call it a day”.

  • DaveUWSNYC

The crotch in the first full-body pic makes it look like she has buttfront.

    • rosie5215

    • Vickiefantastico

      President Skroob! Salute!

    • Lucía Gavello

I saw the same thing, that seam is unforgiving.

    • kimmeister

Yes, I actually think she’s pulling off the look (excluding the hair) fairly well, if it weren’t for that disturbing crotch.

    • what not

It reminded me of Kristen Stewart’s vulvar Stella McCartney jumpsuit. Even severely toned down, there’s no going back from that.

  • To confirm something for myself I just did a quick search on this site for Jena Malone, and I think not just is this not her dress, she probably wouldn’t know her dress if it jumped up and bit her. She consistently chooses clothes that don’t really suit her. Is she using the Lena Dunham definition of edginess meaning that you look a bit shit?

    • Jessica Freeman

She takes it too far/tries too hard and it shows every single time.

    • Mismarker

Coco Chanel: “Always remove one thing before you leave the house. Less is more.”
Jena Malone and Lena Dunham: “Always look a bit shit.”

    • StarburstLady

I feel sort of bad for her, but she really hasn’t been able to pull off edgy, as hard as she tries. She’s got a sweet girl-next-door face and presence, and she hasn’t been able to successfully play against it. It’s why I think she didn’t totally work in her part in the Hunger Games. But she’s damned if she’s not gonna try to be that edgy bitch…

    • lunchcoma

I don’t think it’s quite the same thing. Malone seems like she’s trying really hard to be unique but doesn’t have a good understanding of what works for her. I think that Dunham’s problem is different and that it goes more to people not knowing how to make dresses that flatter her body and her not knowing how to give notes on them. Dunham tries for elegance as often as edginess. It’s just that she doesn’t pull either off.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

She reminds me of Ginnifer Goodwin. Both have bubbly personalities and but pose as Fashion Bitches on the RC; each seem to gravitate towards clothing they can’t quite pull off.

  • I so badly want her to look fierce, because she was KILLER in Catching Fire. But I think Jena is in need of a bit of a style intervention. I can’t remember I saw a red carpet look of hers and thought “Wow.” Or even “That’s sort of OK.”

    • Danielle

I see what you did there.

  • Anna

Oh Jena, if you think it’s your dress, then it MOST DEFINITELY IS NOT your dress. Your Flock of Seagulls french twist gave me a much-needed laugh this morning though, so there’s that.

    • ballerinawithagun

Flock of Seagulls, gotta get and dance now!

  • Lolo Andre

Gurl has been selling us edgy looks for some time. WE ARE NOT BUYING IT

  • SewingSiren

Orange and black are great for Halloween.

    • Janet B

      …and school colors.

  • histrogeek

Is the flounce weighed? Because the poor girl seems to be leaning off to the side.

  • decormaven

Very confused styling. With a little hair product, it could go Lollipop Guild with more of a butch attitude.

  • Danielle

I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you! How dare you? Learn something from this!!

  • @Biting Panda

I think I’m going to have to stop with any critique of Ms. Malone. My gut is telling me we’re dealing more with mental health than shitty styling.

    • Dam_Angel

But styling would have made a difference. Kick ass black shoes and soften the fried hair.

    • demidaemon

Style does sometimes serve a s a representation of one’s mental state. Does that mean that stylists are also licensed therapists? Discuss.

      • @Biting Panda

Yes, often the wrapping reveals clues to the present inside. Honestly though, I’m going more off intangibles. A look, an aura, a clear affection for in your face pieces and aggressive styling.

  • ashtangajunkie

I don’t completely hate this on her, but that hair could make anything look bad. I admire her commitment to “edgy,” even though I don’t buy it whatsoever.

  • Jessica Freeman

She’s interesting because she clearly wants to be a risk taker, but more often than not, she cannot pull it off. It’s usually so severe you can’t appreciate it. The person that did her hair should be fired for even thinking that was remotely stylish.

  • FrigidDiva

I actually like the garment and as I much as I really don’t like Kristen Stewart, this seems like something she’d be able to pull off…or maybe it’s just Jena’s side swept hair that makes me think KStew. Whatever the case, I really wish she’d ditch this blonde look. I know that almost every startlet in Hollywood thinks they need to go blonde at some point, but for some people it just doesn’t work, and on her it does not even remotely work.

    • I thought KStew briefly too – I think it is because the pants remind me of KStew’s Met Gala Stella McCartneys that gave her labia up to her waist.

      • FrigidDiva

Ugh, yes. Now I’m having flashbacks. Stella McCartney and pantsuits/jumpsuits makes me stabby.

    • filmcricket

I agree. I know it’s not fair to say that blonde, blue-eyed women cannot do “edgy” but they are certainly a rare breed. I think she’d be pulling this off much better as a brunette.

    • Jacob Bowen

Kstew has the “I don’t give a shit” attitude that this outfit needs.

    • Janet B

Kristen was my first thought, then Emma Watson. Emma has worn pants on the RC previously and she can pull off pretty/edgy.

      • demidaemon

I think this might be a bit too similar to Emma’s last pants with a top outfit, though. She’s not one to repeat a look, even if it is somewhat different than her previous one.

  • Alyssa

I don’t like jumpsuits that disguise themselves as a crop top and pants. That hair is not doing her any favors. I really want her to nail it, just once, because I loved her as Johanna and think she’s capable of rocking it on the red carpet. Maybe call up Evan Rachel Wood’s stylist?

    • FrigidDiva

I think I would have liked this infinately more if it was a crop top and pants, and not a pantsuit. I thought it WAS a top/pants combo until I looked more closely at it. Who thinks, lets make a pantsuit with a huge cut out at the ab area?

      • Alyssa

If I didn’t know better, I would have guessed Stella!

  • BayTampaBay

Do not like the orange. It looks like Halloween. Love the shoe on the model.

  • marlie

I appreciate that Jena likes to be adventurous with her looks, but this type of “edgy” doesn’t seem to suit her, for some reason.

  • boweryboy

It’s a pantsuit? With a cutout? That alone offends me.

I do get what she was going for with the hair playing off the top half so tiny snaps of appreciation for that. But, no.

  • KinoEye

    Is that anyone’s hair?

    • SugarSnap108

Mine – after three days of lying in bed with the flu.

  • FancyPhilly

I don’t like the hair either, but I do like the outfit. I think trimming a bit from the flounce would have done a lot to balance everything out. Kudos to her for trying something different.

  • 3boysful

Too Halloween. Hair looks like something a starlet does with dull scissors at 3am on a bender.

  • colleenjanel

If you have to try this hard to be edgy, you aren’t really edgy. Poor girl’s gonna sprain something.

  • Betsy

I think she saw Tilda Swinton try this hair and thought she too could pull it off. Unfortunately, no one does edgy hair like Tilda.

    • marlie

And at the same time, Tilda’s hair didn’t look so fried and damaged that it was about to break off at any second.

  • Jecca2244

im more on board with the outfit than the hair. yikes!

  • Shawn EH

It’s still a step up from some of her other attempts. The pants are chic, and the top is … orange.

  • Gatto Nero

The whole effect is swamping her.
Even she looks unsure about the hair, which isn’t well executed.

  • Kent Roby

It’s Halloween, y’all! Actually, I do like this look just for being so different.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the outfit on her. I think the hair is bad and the shoes are wrong, but she’s almost pulling this one off. She’s leggy enough for the pants and the makeup is good. I’d give it a C for effort.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

it looks like her hairstylist mopped a puddle of bleach off the floor with her poor head. fire the person that did that to you, sweetie.

  • This belongs on Kristen Stewart. Whom I dislike, but it really is her ideal look.

    • J. Preposterice

I was just thinking about this. Why do I think it would work on Stewart (or a few other people) and doesn’t work on Malone? I came down to a few things.

One is that, for all the crap Stewart gets for her attitude and face, it’s a good attitude & face for challenging clothes. Malone looks like she’s pissed off and is just DARING you to say something about her outfit or her hair, because she’s not totally comfortable with them. Stewart’s face usually looks like she just doesn’t care what you think, and she only looks uncomfortable when she’s in more gown-y/girl-y clothes.

This is the kind of outfit that needs “because fuck you, that’s why” K. Stew or “lol you didn’t believe I could clean up this well” Ke$ha or “what this old thing” SWINTON or something — it can go on multiple people who have multiple different attitudes, is what I’m saying, but it cannot, absolutely CANNOT, go with “UM I CAN WEAR THIS, RIGHT? YEAH. WHAT? I SAW THAT THING YOU DID WITH YOUR EYEBROWS. I HATE YOU. UMM.”

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Chloe Sevigny Jr.

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE this shade of orange, but could have it been paired with something OTHER than black, like the blue from Emmy Rossum’s dress?

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, that blue is always wonderful with black!

  • In_Stitches

I think the main problem is she’s just posing wrong. She’s popping her hip out away from the flounce so she has excess curvature and volume on both sides. If she popped her hip out into the flounce instead of away from it, it would create some cool lines.

That begs the question; does a look work if it needs such strict rules?

    • marlie

I think it can, but that means that the stylist/designer has to be even more specific about what starlet they put in the look. It has to be a ladystar who intrinsically knows what features of a garment to highlight/not highlight, or who takes direction well enough to pose as they’re told to.

  • teensmom99

I actually think this is a personal best. But she needs a hair person, STAT!

  • lunchcoma

I get that she wants to be adventurous, and there’s something admirable in that. But she’s really going in the wrong direction. I’m not even sure what the right risk-taking direction is for her.

  • bellafigura1

This outfit is perfect on her. I think she’s wearing the hell out of it. The hair is a giant question mark.

  • Tracy_Flick

    Very Sevigny. I hate it.

  • uprightcitizen

I think she could totally pull of the outfit. The fit is great and those pants are chic as hell (great fabric). It’s the color that’s wrong. Very few white people can get away with that orange. If this were in teal, and she didn’t have odd 80s/gym combo hair, I think she’d look cool. Maybe a chunky bracelet on the arm opposite the flounce/drape thing, for balance.

  • Call me Bee

It’s certainly an interesting outfit. Love the color on her–but frankly, I’m so distracted by that mall rake and her shiny forehead that even bight orange can’t get my attention. If she had a little bang–that would be awesome….

  • JauntyJohn

Well… as has been noted, major points for not playing it safe.
I think my problem with the hair is that it looks so unhealthy… fried and dried to within an inch of its poor little follicled life.
And no, she somehow doesn’t have the gravitas to pull this off… but I’m also awarding points for not slouching.

    • kimmeister

Are any points deducted for shoving her hand in her pocket?

      • JauntyJohn

No, but only because we are grading on a curve. 😉

  • paginatrix

She always looks like the pastor’s daughter, trying to be Bad.

  • megawatt

Anyone else see “cutout jumpsuit” and momentarily think, “This is what we’re calling a shirt and pants now?”

  • B_C_J

I really like this outfit on her. What I think is not working are the Halloween colors. Make the top a deep lavender & this would work. The hair, however, is a tragedy. I think a French twist would be the way to go.

  • Lilithcat

That outfit is pure Kim Novak. In “Bell, Book, and Candle”. All she’s missing is Pyewacket.

    • Snailstsichr

      Love that movie!

  • Trickytrisha

Neck down, it’s fine for me. Neck up, isn’t.

  • Denise Alden

The only way this works is if her head is shaved.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

How do you use the bathroom in a jumpsuit like this?

  • bertkeeter

I didn’t like this when Raf at DIOR did it… I still don’t!

  • For a horrifying moment, I thought this was actually her haircut.

  • Little_Olive

The poor thing felt she was balancing off the mullet in the top with that hair… honey, Ariel Winters couldn’t do that. Not that we’d accept it.

All things considered, I think she is not *that* far from pulling this off. Credit where it’s due. I also do not think Marisa Tomei would be right for it -it needs someone with a slender figure.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I love this, but it has too many issues, like the poor fit of the pants. And that hair needs some tlc. Too bad, could have been great.

  • SierraDelta

Jewelry. This is not a bad word, Hollywood.

  • Her hair and makeup people clearly hate her.

  • demidaemon

Well, this happened. I’m not happy about it. The whole look reminds me of someone who just rolled out of bed, used her sheet as her top, and went out. Not good.

  • anotherkate

I don’t know. I’m inclined to admire the effort, but lately she has been falling more on the “I’m doing drugs” side of risky than the “fashion forward and daring” side. She looks like she’s all edge and zero chic, which is a shame because I’ve liked her in every movie I’ve seen her in.

  • ShaoLinKitten

    Chloe Sevigny Lite.

  • cocohall

She appears to be a slip of a girl, yet still not the right figure for this look. It really is a FMO outfit – you just need more height to make that long orange tail work. On the model it is fluttering somewhere between the knee and the calf, on Jena it is nearly down to her ankle. As for the hair, she appears to have been in a F5 hurricane. Hairstyle by FEMA.

  • KT

    Hahaha. What an asshole.

  • GillianHolroyd

She strikes me as someone who is girl-cute striving to be edgy. Her recent looks have been horrifying but I sorta-kinda like this one. If the top hadn’t been yellow/mango/orange which clashes with her over-processed hair, I think she could have pulled it off.

  • andi56

She looks angry at us, too.
The other day, I was getting my hair relaxed, and it looked just like hers before Mulan called me back into the chair, saying, “Honey, you can NOT go outside looking like that!” Perhaps this dear little girl should have taken that advice.

  • elzatelzabelz

I think it would look great on Rooney Mara. Totally in her wheelhouse. Anyone else think Flock of Seagulls?-just me…

    • Candigirl1968

      I’m thinking Naomie Harris.

Whoever is styling Jena seems to keep putting her in outfits that are just too challenging for where she is. It’s not a knock on her – it’s just that some things require a black belt in fashion, and the person picking needs to understand if you are a mere yellow belt.

  • livesarah

Whyyyyy won’t she ditch that hair-colour?

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

  • Judih1

LOVE this look – but not on her. She lacks the “umph” to pull it off, plus the lack of make up and accessories isn’t helping

  • SophieB210

There’s so much going on that the Halloween color combo is actually the last thing you notice.

  • ScarlettHarlot

When she was cast in Catching Fire, I complained that I had imagined Joanna has drop dead gorgeous, and that Jena is to quirky for that. My husband said it was perfect, because her features lend themselves to the aesthetics of a futuristic world, and seeing the film, he’s right. I don’t think she’s ever looked better than in that film, and I kind of wish she’d just dress in Joanna drag for all her public appearances.

Also, she kind of reminds me of Carol from the Walking Dead in some of these pics – maybe they should be in a mother/daughter film together. Or Jena plays a younger version of Melissa.

  • Clash D

Gawd, she looks like she rode in on a tornado. From a pumpkin patch somewhere. The model’s wearing some kicky heels though.

  • Michelle Gennari

She needs to cover up that shiny five-head.

  • Sweetvegan

I think she looks great! It would’ve been better if that drapey thing on the side were shorter, to fit her height, but it’s a great look on her!

  • colorjunky

    Needs a stylist ASAP!
