Pope Tilda came to the Berlin International Film Festival to serve a look, pick up a bear, and burn the place down; not necessarily in that order. The pontiff was there to receive the Honorary Golden Bear Award during the opening ceremony and she showed up in something rare: a Chanel that really works for her.
It’s got both that stately, slightly intimidating priestly vive to it, but the ruffles and the buttons lend it a regal air. On anyone else, we’d likely find this dress dreary, heavy, or ill-suited to the wearer, but it’s perfect for her. No notes. After she got her cute little bear, she went on to give a barn-burner of a speech, decrying “greed-addicted governments,” human rights abuses, and genocide, while offering cinema up as a powerful corrective. Because THAT’s how your pope does it. Encyclical the hell out of those bitches, Tilda.
