Darlings, thanks to a bunch of international film festivals, the accompanying parties at said film festivals, and various individual films getting waivers from the WGA and SAG AFTRA in the middle of their dual strike, we are faced with a veritable tsunami of red carpetry to throw at you today. Strap yourselves in for lots of gowns and even more opinions. First up in the judging circle are the stars of the extremely buzzy Priscilla, Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny, ditching the Presley drag for the photo call and premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
AT THE PHOTOCALL
Jacob Elordi in Bottega Veneta
It’s almost like he’s taking a page from the last Elvis’ playbook. Elvis star Austin Butler spent most of last year working a sort of sleazy chic vibe while promoting his film. We thought it was a pretty smart way to promote an Elvis turn without lapsing into Elvis cosplay. Evidently, Jacob and his stylist agree. This works well. We don’t love the hair, but we can’t deny it’s the kind of hair through which you want to run your fingers.
Cailee Spaeny in Rodarte
She, on the other hand, seems to be moving as far away from a Priscilla style as she can, which strikes us as smart. It’s got that fussy-twee thing that Rodarte does so often. We don’t love the pink pumps, hem length or fake flower, but the rest of the design is kind of striking and pretty. We can’t say we’re loving her hair either.
AT THE PREMIERE
He is very tall. This casting must’ve worked really well to drive home that whole child-bride vibe in the Presley relationship.
Jacob Elordi in Valentino
He looks okay. We would expect a Valentino tux to have a better fit than that, although perfect sizing does tend to get more difficult when the guy’s like eight feet tall.
Cailee Spaeny in Miu Miu
We really don’t like the shape or size of that keyhole, but the design is elegantly pretty overall. We like the hair much better here, although we tend to think the style is a little aging.
