Viola Davis was inadvertently the most HILARIOUS attendee at last night’s Oscars – to us, at least. Before you scroll down, we refer you to our pre-Oscars rundown of her awards season looks and our confident prediction that she would likely show up in a bold color and an outrageous silhouette:
Like we said, we’re not convinced that these “ology” posts work all that well in terms of predicting what someone will wear on the night she might win an Oscar, but given how tightly consistent this promo wardrobe was, we have a hard time seeing her in anything that isn’t brightly colored and exuberant.
Boy, are we glad we left that little bit of wiggle room to be wrong in our predictions because Miss Viola clearly doesn’t like to be considered predictable:
No bold colors here – no color at all, in fact. And the silhouette is a more or less standard one for a formal red carpet. There’s a tendency for actors to sometimes snap back to a more conservative approach after sowing some wild style oats throughout awards season – especially American actors, who are often surrounded by the very executives, producers, directors and mover-shakers who could have an effect on their career prospects. It is an industry event, after all. We would have loved to have seen her step out in something boldly colored or oddly shaped, since she seemed to have loved those looks when she was wearing them. We had to sort of re-calibrate our settings when we saw this, but the more we looked at it, the more it started appealing to us. We think the hair may have some detractors, but we like the way it works with the dress, lending the whole look a sort of hard-vs-soft tension to it. In terms of design, we think the skirt doesn’t marry as well to the bodice as it could have (it almost feels like an afterthought), but the design from the waist up is beautiful and fascinating to look at, which is a hard thing to pull off in an all-white garment. The longer you take it in, the more you realize how interesting and unusual the design actually is.
