Lorenzo’s Favorite Nordic TV Shows on Netflix

Darlings, if you’ve listened to our podcast more than a handful of times, you’ve probably heard Lorenzo gush about his favorite subtitled binge-watches on Netflix. For a while now, listeners have been asking him to more formally compile viewing lists and since we’re all in peak binge-watching mode at the moment, he figured you’d all like a list of cozy and not-so-cozy Nordic TV shows to get you through this time. Lorenzo feels that Nordic shows have a tendency to go deeper on the more psychologically challenging aspects of its characters, often show a complexity he craves in his TV shows, and almost always come packaged in breathtaking photography. Here are his faves if you’re desperately seeking something new in your entertainment. And who isn’t at the moment?

Borderliner
PinTo protect his family, a police detective covers up a murder case. But when his partner suspects foul play, he is trapped in a dangerous game on duty.

Lorenzo says: “By far my fave of all of these shows, I’ve watched Borderliner a hundred times. I love that the main character is gay, but it’s not the focus of his character. I don’t care if it’s shallow, Tobias Santelmann is HOT.”

Occupied
PinIn the near future, Russia initiates a “silk glove” invasion of Norway to restart oil production, but soon uncertainty, chaos and danger erupt.

Lorenzo says: “A fascinating and tense take on life under occupation set in modern Norway.”

Quicksand
PinAfter a tragedy at a school sends shock waves through a wealthy Stockholm suburb, a seemingly well-adjusted teen finds herself on trial for murder.

Lorenzo says: “A high school drama that’s about much more than typical high school dramatics, it dives into questions of why society fails to believe women when they claim to be victimized.”

Deadwind
PinJust months after a tragic loss, detective Sofia Karppi investigates the murder of a woman with ties to a Helsinki construction company.

Lorenzo says: “A great example of the kind of crime drama that’s as much about the demons of the person investigating it as it is the crime itself. Pihla Viitala is amazing as the lead character; co-star Lauri Tilkanen is HOT and has STUNNING coats.”

Bordertown
PinA gifted detective takes a job in a small town so he can spend more time with his family. But he’s soon drawn into a web of disturbing murder cases.

“A supernatural spin on a more or less typical crime drama, Ville Vartanen plays a detective with “gifts” he uses to solve a string of local murders. Anu Sinisalo is also very good in it.”

The Valhalla Murders
PinAn Oslo detective with a painful past returns to his native Iceland to help a police officer hunt for a serial killer with a link to a mysterious photograph.

Lorenzo says, “Yes, it’s another murder show. Sue me. This one has the usual complex characters and unexpected twists, but I really love the camaraderie between the two main characters.”

Nobel
PinA series of incidents in Afghanistan set complicated political and personal events in motion for a returning Norwegian Special Forces officer.

Lorenzo says: “What I love about this show is that it gave me a different perceptive of the Afghanistan war through the lenses of a different country and culture. We’re so used to watching shows about it through an American perspective.”

Rita
PinWhen a school talent show forces Rita to re-evaluate her uncompromising relationship to truth, she realizes she’s been doing some lying of her own.

Lorenzo says: “Again, I’m always interested in getting a glimpse of how things are done in another country and I loved this show about an unconventional teacher who just won’t do things the conventional way. Mille Dinesen is really good as the main character.”

Ragnarok
PinIn a Norwegian town poisoned by pollution and rattled by melting glaciers, the End Times feel all too real. It’ll take a legend to battle an old evil.

Lorenzo says: “I was really curious to see a show based on Norse mythology having a high-school student with supernatural powers as the main character and I was immediately hooked.”

Bonus Family
PinA new couple, their exes and their children navigate the emotional challenges and tricky logistics of blended family life in this Swedish dramedy.

Lorenzo says: “It’s a type of show you don’t see often enough; about couples and families having to deal with their exes and the logistics of how  children deal with this blend of families, new and old members and how it affects their lives.”
