Ever since the #TimesUp dress blackout at the Golden Globes a couple of years ago, the very act of dressing entire in black or black-and-white still holds some sway as a symbol of quiet solidarity among the celebrity women set. It’s not for us to decide who was sending a message here or not, but if nothing else, these women (some of them, anyway) deserve some props for keeping their not-so-little black dresses anything but boring.
Amy Poehler in Sergio Hudson
Miss Amy got her proportions right! We knew you could do it, girl! This looks great on her. The combination of accentuated shoulder and waist-defining belt look fantastic on her.
Greta Gerwig in Proenza Schouler
Hmm. Well, it’sa an interesting choice; we’ll give it that. We like the bottom half, but that big white cuff of a bodice is overwhelming and her choice of hairstyle doesn’t work well with the dress.
Jennifer Aniston in Dior Couture
Jen in black is a sight as common as a sunset, but at least she had a little fun with the silhouette.
Kate McKinnon in Prabal Gurung
It’s a decent suit and she looks great in it, but the cut feels a little business-like.
Kerry Washington in Altuzarra
And then there’s Miss Kerry, who pulled THIS swerve on us. We can’t say we love it. Not exactly. But we do have to say, it’s pretty hot and she’s doing a lot to keep it from coming off tacky or tryhard. If the skirt wasn’t satin, we might like it more.
Margaret Qualley in Chanel
She doesn’t play things up on the red carpet and tends to pick outfits that make her disappear. Step it up, girl.
Naomi Watts in Armani Privé
It’s not going to win any design awards, but that’s a fantastic gown on her.
Rachel Weisz in Tom Ford
She’s built for simple and classic looks like this, but we think this needed a bit more oomph to it.
Rooney Mara in Givenchy
This is so incredibly goofy, but we’re so happy to see her break away from her Audreybot persona that we almost don’t care she’s veering headlong into “Sexy Goth Frida Kahlo,” which we didn’t even realize was a thing.
Zoë Kravitz in Saint Laurent
One of our faves of the night. Perfectly balanced, perfectly styled and seemingly effortless. She looks amazing.
