Miss Tay’s got a look for this particular moment and she’s sticking with it.
She came out for the Teen Choice Awards earlier this month in a similarly brightly colored, highly patterned Versace jacket. It’s not unusual for a pop star to settle on a specific look or set of elements while promoting an album. You don’t see Gaga wearing cowboy hats much anymore, for instance. This is actually a much better version than her earlier attempt, which was way too matchy and not accessorized well. This jacket is much more glam and the addition of the sparkly thigh-highs and that pink sequined whatever-it-is (top? bodysuit? teeny dress?) pulls it all together in a much more high-fashion sort of way. She looks great. In fact, we’d rate this one of her best red carpet looks in a really long time.
Look, if you’d asked us to predict who’d be coming out on that VMAs 2019 stage with the biggest pro-queer, rainbow-infused pop statement of the year, we would never have predicted it would be her. Credit where it’s due. Allyship isn’t easy and almost no one gets it perfect, but girlfriend came out hard on this one and we can’t hate.
