We’ve got another pod-pourri of a show for you this week, darlings. Our main focus arose out of the news that RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Valentina had been cast as Angel in the upcoming production of Rent Live! This is of a piece with the drag zeitgeist in latter 2018.
With Shangela and Willam wowing them in A Star is Born, Peppermint making history on Broadway, Aquaria getting modeling contracts and editor positions, Alyssa with her own show on Neflix, Katy and Trixie with their show on Viceland and Sasha Velour walking the runways, it seems to us that we’re not only in the middle of a major drag moment, but that moment is radiating out from the world of drag and conquering every corner of the culture. And only part of it can be attributed to Drag Race or Ru himself. We talk about the cultural and political factors that led to this moment, but we also note how insane Drag Race’s alumni success rate is when compared to other reality competitions.
Also, a little back-and-forth on celebrity Halloweening and how much it’s changed in the last ten years or so. Big surprise: social media has a lot to do with how and why it’s different. And why are there so many celebrity Halloween parties now and yet so few A-list attendees? Also: a bit of inside-baseball on why we tend not to cover celebrity Halloween costumes as much as other sites do.
Plus: Lo gushes about Netflix’s new acquisition The Bodyguard, featuring Game of Thrones star Richard Madden in his tightie-whities. Other things happen as well, we understand. And Tom gives a few more thoughts on the brilliance of Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor Who performance, as well as the seriously impressive job the makeup team does on her (because he’s shallow like that).
Yes, we bounce all over the damn place on this one, bickering and chatting and laughing the whole time. Thank you once again for supporting our total nonsense, dolls!
