Awkwafina Loosens Up at the Asian World Film Festival

Okay, so a couple of things are happening here and we want to prepare you all so you can be supportive of Miss Awkwafina’s efforts.

Actually, we just totally over-stated things to get you to scroll down, but that’s just good blogging, darlings. Our point: She’s been having a grand old time with her red carpetry, starting with Ocean’s 8 and then going full-bore for the Crazy Rich Asians poledance. She adopted a slightly tongue-in-cheek approach by opting for label-heavy, occasionally tacky, head-turning lewks served up with a deliberately stagey and performative posing style that involved a lot of cheek-sucking and looking down the nose at the camera. It was funny and kind of a lark if you knew her background. And it made for a good approach to promote both films.

This isn’t the most original look in the world and truth be told, it all goes south from the knees down, with the sheer hem and the focus-pulling shoes. But aside from that, it’s a pretty dress, paired with pretty hair and makeup, on someone who’s giving off a loose, confident, pleased-with-herself vibe. We’d like to see a little more of that from her.
