It was another Tiara Day for Princess Cathy as she headed to the state banquet for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu of Nigeria at Windsor Castle. We’re a day late getting to this one because of Oscar blogging, but there was no way we were going to let this tiara moment pass without opinionating.

The dress is a stunner. It might be one of our all-time faves, in fact. The high collar, ruching and sheer bishop sleeves are all slightly unusual choices for her, as is the rich color. She usually goes for pales and pastels for the formal dinners. The darker color and simple design sets off the regalia well. Paler, fussier, more modern styles tend to fight with the ribbons and badges but this almost provides a blank canvas for them. The result is exceedingly regal — or it would be if she’d just pin those pageant curls up. Sorry, but they bring the whole look down, making her look like a pretender when she’s very clearly not. These tiaras were not designed to be worn with long locks hanging down freely and we don’t think they’re a piece of jewelry that you can modernize with styling. If you’ve got to wear the tiara, you should plan for a more queenly coif. Otherwise, if you insist on the royal ringlets, you may as well emblazon MISS BRITAIN on that sash.
