We’re big supporters of costume design around these parts, as anyone who’s read us for any length of time might know. so we’re always pleased to see the small handful of stars who show up for them at the annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. Frankly, every single Oscar-nominated actor should be at this thing every year, but unfortunately, most of them never show. Wisely, the Guild presented the Spotlight Award to Kate Hudson and the Vanguard Spotlight to Teyana Taylor in order to ensure two high-wattage attendees.
Jodie Turner-Smith in Marc Jacobs

Lady, we love you, and this is almost striking in a way, but you are wearing your coat backwards.
Kate Hudson in Valentino

Not really feeling the fur. The design is a little overwrought and we can’t say we like the color, but there’s something about the askew style that suits her well. The pleating looks a little sloppy, but the neckline really works for her. Love the choker, but it doesn’t go.
Katherine LaNasa in Elie Saab

It’s a gorgeous dress. While we wouldn’t suggest it looks bad on her, we do think a blonde white woman is going to get the least benefit out of it. She’d be better in a silver or bronze. We understand the impulse not to load up on jewelry, but this neckline begs for a necklace.
Sasheer Zamata

Love this. It’s dramatic and glamorous, but it doesn’t ask too much of its wearer. We like the clean face with this.
Teyana Taylor in Tamara Ralph

Stunningly unforgettable, as always. That color looks amazing on her. The fit in the bust is impressive, but we shouldn’t be seeing the hardware inside the skirt.
Tracee Ellis Ross in Mugler

Love the shape and the style for her, but we hate the color and we’d rather see this in a less shiny textile. Also, the hem is too long.
