The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continued their tour of Jordan by visiting the National Centre for Rehabilitation of Addicts (NCRA) with a World Health Organization delegation and then later, the World Central Kitchen Food with WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The looks were barely looks at all, by design.

She’s always had a slightly odd set of preferences for outerwear, opting for bulky or blocky pieces most of the time. We go back and forth on this one, depending on the picture. It’s not very fresh or flattering — a blanket with sleeves — and the color is pretty dreary, but there are times where she makes it look pretty chic. In this case, her all-black outfit underneath is a smart choice to show it off.

Whether by design or by default, this doesn’t feel like a royal engagement and it doesn’t seem like they’re trying to draw that comparison. People will think we’re making excuses for her, but they’re going into places like refugee camps, drug treatment centers and aid kitchens, all of which require an avoidance of anything that smacks of glamour or attention-seeking. This is one engagement where her preference for minimalist neutral items is serving her pretty well. That all-black outfit is boring as hell, but in this instance, that’s what it should be. She doesn’t look remotely out of place talking to aid workers. Harry could stand to try a little harder. There’s casually low-key and then there’s just looking a mess.
