We admit that the bitchy side of us rolled our eyes at the news that Angelina Jolie would be in a film about the French fashion industry, if only because her own approach to public style has been, for decades now, one that can be summed up succinctly as “resting on pretty.” The rage-inducing fact of the matter is that really beautiful people don’t have to worry too much about what they’re wearing. They know they’ll always make an impact just by showing up with that face on their head. We’d like to say that Angie showed up to the Paris premiere of Couture having stepped up her game for the situation, but…

… that wouldn’t be quite true. To be fair, wearing a silver sequined Gucci gown is something of an elevated effort for her, since she tends to just swaddle herself in neutrals and call it good. The dress has potential, but that lining situation ruins it. Putting a tiny little skin-matching mini-dress on under a sheer dress isn’t a substitute for a well-executed lining. On the other hand, we’re happy she didn’t just leave it unlined and walk out in her underwear. Like Meghan Markle, she seems determined to keep color away from her body, even though her own coloring would take very well to it. This just washes her out.
