When we say that Ponies stars Haley Lu Richardson and Emilia Clarke took different approaches to their red carpet style for the series premiere, it’s possible that we are underselling the point slightly.

They took WILDLY different approaches.
EMILIA CLARKE IN THE ROW

This is chic and elegantly restrained in that very The Row sort of way. It wouldn’t have been our first choice for her because the dourness of the brand doesn’t work well with her megawatt smile. Also, the shape is kind of weird from the side. But it looks gorgeous on her from the front. We keep wanting to suggest something sparkly to add some interest, but The Row doesn’t take well to aggressive styling. It’s a put-on-and-go brand, confident in the idea that all you need is a piece from The Row. Then there’s the other approach…
HALEY LU RICHARDSON

Now, the first impulse you might have is to suggest that the former Game of Thrones star has access to a greater range of high-end fashion and thus any comparisons are unfair, but we let’s be real here: she’s not dressed like this because she’s too poor or unfamous to get free stuff. It’s perfectly easy for any person to find a simple, pretty frock, suitable for picture-taking and we doubt very much that a cast member of The White Lotus can’t get her hands on a little Miu Miu or something. No, your girl wanted to wear this and clearly loves wearing it. We regret to inform her that she and/or her style team have horrific taste and that a major course-correction is warranted. This frock is fucking hideous.
ABOUT THE SERIES:
Moscow, 1977. Two “PONIES” (“persons of no interest” in intelligence speak) work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy. That is until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, and the pair become CIA operatives. Bea (Emilia Clarke) is an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Her cohort, Twila (Haley Lu Richardson), is a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless. Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place.
