Yesterday, a yuletide seductress! Today, a jingle-jangle princess. Because even with a list of sad dresses and sexy dresses and unsettling or bloody dresses, sometimes, you’ve just got to return to the jingle-jangle. In other words, we wanted this calendar to be full of surprising or unexpected choices, but a couple of them are just here to give you a jolt of that classic Christmas aesthetic. And who could embody that more than Cindy Lou Who?

Come on, that’s adorable. We especially love the Crocs, which are the most notable and important part of the costume, in our opinion. To be fair, there’s a LOT going on with this costume and you really should take the whole look in to appreciate costume designer Rita Ryack’s work.

Played by Taylor Momsen in director Ron Howard’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the great thing about her costume is that it’s loaded with Christmas whimsy but manages to almost completely avoid the Victoriana that tends to define the classic Christmas aesthetic. She may be a Who from Whoville, but the look is strictly 21st Century American. It owes more to child pageants and drag queens than it does to Dickens. We don’t think we’re going out on a limb to suggest that in the early aughts, you could have sourced a very good approximation of the basics of this look, from the tights to the pink mittens, just by shopping at Target. Of course the insane hair, the cup of cocoa and the plate of cookies on her skirt are what tip it over into fantasy. As we noted with Martha May Whovier’s appearance on this list, everyone in Whoville wears literal representations of their own station or desires on their clothing. Look at how she and her parents are dressed in the same tablecloth gingham, as if it were a family tartan. It’s not enough for Cindy Lou Who to be in the most Christmassy outfit any little fashion-minded girl could hope for, she has to be decked in the accoutrements of the holiday, from the perspective of a child. Christmas is about sweets.
