We’ve always said that Princess Catherine’s two best style modes were Sporty Cathy and Working Mom Cathy because she tends to express herself well and come alive when she gets to dress that way. As we noted yesterday, in terms of duties that call for a more high-fashion look, we think Mourning Cathy is probably when she’s at her best, especially if it allows her to work a subtle military theme because she’s also always been good at doing that without looking like a dilettante. She visited the National Memorial Arboretum for a Service of Remembrance at the Armed Forces Memorial, where she read a poem she’d commissioned for the occasion.

Queen Camilla had an engagement the other day where she attempted this military-adjacent style trick and inadvertently proved just how good at Kate can be. The Queen looked like she was wearing a costume, while the Princess looks like she’s paying respectful tribute while silently acknowledging her own stature within certain military units. The royal-watching press tends to want to look for all sorts of hidden messages or “touching tributes” in her style choices in order to drive engagement, but sending messages is not something this extremely private princess likes to do. Her true skill in this area is knowing how to read the history of a certain type of engagement, the mistakes other royals have made in the past, and then ensuring that she never puts a foot wrong. She is deathlessly appropriate. Love the hat. We like it so much more than the increasingly absurd fascinators she’s favored.
