Queen Max is a themey sort of queen when it comes to her style, so it’s not surprising she’d show up in France sporting a Chanel/Dior melange topped off with a literal beret, but what is at least a little surprising is that she got the details correct this time.

***** Queen Maxima came to Toulouse with King Willem-Alexander and visited to the Prefecture, where they did royal things like signing a roadmap and having a conversation with Prefect Pierre-Andre Durand, followed by a statement to the press in Toulouse, France. We, for our parts, are her for the shallow bits, of course. We wouldn’t normally be in approval of an all-beige outfit on a blonde white woman, but she has a somewhat exuberant sense of color and this represents a serious, and admirably well-executed toning down. We think the beret borders on ridiculous given the setting, but she’s wearing it well. We even like the shoes, although we definitely think the style should be restricted to high-ranking royals. They’re super-twee, but that kind of fairy tale touch works for this crowd. We tend to think her somewhat unusual methods for wearing royal brooches can get a little gimmicky, but the buckle actually works here.
