The gown is very nice, although we think the lining situation could be better. The thing about sporting royal jewels at a formal royal event like this one is that, while the lady in question is obviously going to wear a gown that’s relatively modern in design (as in, no panniers, petticoats, stomachers or ruffled collars, for instance), she’s got to somehow make it work with jewelry that was designed for much more elaborate and more obviously regal styles. Back in the days when kings and queens literally ruled the world, regal style was all about making them appear super human and above the people. But in the modern era, most royals wear the kinds of gowns you might find at a film premiere or charity gala, so when you plop centuries’ worth of gems on top of them, it looks a little, well, odd. This is even more noticeable when the royal jewels in question are vividly colored. This is a long way of saying that we don’t actually think matching your gown to the sapphires in your tiara is the right way to go, but we also think that conventional ideas of matching and accessorizing go out the window when literal crowns are being placed on royal heads. This is exactly the time to sport as many gems as you can fit on your person, so she’s completely appropriate for the occasion, even if we think the jewelry looks like way too much with the dress.
