We’re days behind on this one, we admit. We opted to give their co-star Ayo Edebiri the spotlight treatment before the holiday break, but it’s a new week, a new month, and (not technically but go with it) a new season, which means it’s time to clear out the folders and get caught up on things, so let’s judge the hell out of After the Hunt stars Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Chloe Sevigny at the Venice Film Festival premiere.
Julia Roberts in Atelier Versace
This is interesting because it has some fairly consistent Roberts preferences on display, like a lack of embellishment or sparkle, a dark color story, and a simple shape, but it’s also dramatic and slightly unusual in a way that’s a little fresh for her. The harlequin pattern and the silhouette really make it, but we can’t say the black and blue combo is all that photogenic. And we hate the shape of the arms. We’d say she’s wearing the appropriate level and pieces of jewelry the outfit calls for (a necklace wouldn’t work) but she’s not styled in a way that really shows them off, although asking her to wear her hair up is probably a non-starter.
Andrew Garfield in Dior Homme
Your boyfriend’s here and we’re sorry to have to say it, but he’s officially trying too hard. The suit is lovely. The shoes don’t go. The way he’s wearing the tie is eyeroll-worthy.
Chloë Sevigny in Saint Laurent
As always, said with the utmost affection and respect: God bless this crazy bitch. After years of covering her, we honestly don’t think she looks at silly outfits like this and thinks they’re elegant and chic — or even flattering. She looks at them as art pieces and forms of expression and that’s why her fashion is so fun. Look at it this way: she dresses for maximum attention, as any star should, but in all the time we’ve covered her, we can’t ever remember her resorting to skimpy or see-through clothing to get a reaction. Not that there’s anything wrong with a gal getting her baddie on, but her approach has always been more thoughtful and downright fun than simply going for shocking. As noted, the … we guess we have to call it a romper…? The romper is a ridiculous garment but those sandals are… well, they’re something else. Kudos to her for working those things.
