We’re on Day Two of our Emmys coverage, which means it’s time to start rounding them up into groups based on tenuous themes. The easiest one is simply to group all of the perennial LBDs into one post, so here we are: blacks both basic and not-so basic. Hit it, ladies.
Anna Sawai in Armani Privé

Pretty, sparkly; the flounce at the shoulder makes it.
Catherine O’Hara in Christian Dior

We’re not crazy about the bodice but the skirt is very pretty.
Catherine Zeta-Jones in Yara Shoemaker

She’s been on a bit of a black lace kick of late. It suits her and it makes for a good choice for Wednesday promo work, but we think she needs to take a break. This is pretty, but kind of stale.
Chase Sui Wonders in Thom Browne

Don’t like the panel running down the front and HATE that style of strap, which always looks painful to us.
Chloë Sevingy in Saint Laurent

Trust her to find the weirdest black dress. Somehow, the styling – including the heavy jewelry – makes it work, but we’d have found this awkward on most wearers. Those sleeve puffs are a lot.
Jennifer Coolidge in Christian Siriano

It’s fine. A little generic.
Kathryn Hahn in Valentino

She figured out during the Agatha All Along promo tour that she’s got a knack for working witchy styles. We hate the bow, but otherwise, this looks great on her.
Keri Russell in Armani Privé

The airbags have deployed.
Leslie Bibb in Armani Privé

We really hate the design of the bust, but those bands across the bodice are pretty cool.
Meghann Fahy in Valentino

It’s a perfectly fine dress, but she overdid it on the chest contouring. She’s got more makeup between her boobs than on her face. Also, the sandal looks too lightweight for the dress.
Natasha Rothwell in Ines Di Santo

It’s a lot, but she earned this moment. Love the necklace. Hate the sleeves.
Quinta Brunson in Louis Vuitton

Gorgeous, but the keyhole is too large.
Rashida Jones in Christian Dior

This is a weensy bit stale and probably more appropriate for someone several decades older than her, but the quiet sophistication really works for her. We’d have recommended being a little more aggressive with the styling; showier jewelry, maybe bigger hair or a little more slap.
Sarah Catherine Hook in Miu Miu

We’re not in love with the sporty neckline and widely placed straps, but the embellishments really make this dress.
