George and Amal Clooney came to the New York Film Festival premiere of Jay Kelly in the usual Clooney mode: she’s in something fussy and showy and he looks like he got dressed three minutes before they left.
It’s time for us to say something true about Amal Clooney that perhaps many in the fashion press would be fearful of admitting out loud: For an internationally acclaimed human rights lawyer, girlfriend is not in possession of a taste we would classify as “sophisticated.” It’s actually kind of endearing. No one’s got as much going on as she’s got going on and yet her style tastes run toward the flashy and fussy. There was a time when we wondered if her red carpet style represented a sort of anxiety about stepping up to her movie star/icon husband’s level; as if she felt she needed to dress a little outrageously for settings far less important than her professional arena. But after a decade of covering her, it’s safe to say that a) the lady doesn’t do “anxiety,” and b) this is how she likes to dress. The color looks lovely on her, but that craft store skirt is a very silly thing.
