Ariana Grande had herself quite a night at the VMAs and she must have felt in a winning mood, because she snagged celebrity super-stylist Law Roach to get her gussied up for the night and, as he usually does, he delivered for her.

This is pretty and looks more sophisticated than about 75% of what she wore on the Wicked promo tour. The bubble peplum really suits her (it’s not an easy effect to pull off) and we love the contrasting fabric, which lends the look a little bit of visual tension. She still needs to sit her makeup team down and have a serious conversation. She looks spray-painted.

This great for stage work because it’s so bold and graphic that you can’t miss it. Love the skirt. Hate the bodice. Those sheer panels don’t flatter her. They’re wrinkled and the whole bodice looks like it’s tight on her, which is insane when you consider how small she is.

She’s not doing theme-dressing for Wicked: For Good yet (for which we are grateful), but we’re surprised to see her in something so witchy. It’s fine. Pretty much the least interesting dress she wore last night, but we have no issues with it.

This, on the other hand, just looks silly. Girl, you are a quarter-century too old for this Toddlers and Tiaras nonsense.
