Lucy Liu received a Career Achievement Award at the Locarno Film Festival, but we’ve got all the depth of a rain puddle so we’re far more interested in what she wore for the occasion. Going by her choice here and the dress she wore earlier in the week, we think it’s safe to say she’s trying out some new things and looking to expand her range a little. We can do nothing but support that effort. HOWEVER…

We’re not entirely sure how we feel about it. First, we can understand why she didn’t wear it with the hood up, because it tends to look way more bridal or ceremonial that way and it also has a strange effect on the bust, as you can see in the look book shots below. But with the hood down, it loses a good deal of drama and the bust still winds up looking a little odd. In addition, we can’t say we’re loving the silver/gray color story for her. We’d have liked this much more if it had been rendered in gold. Having said all that, we like that she’s trying to expand her range a little. There’s a certain “grande dame” feeling to her choices of late, although we don’t think she has to rush headlong into more mature styles just yet, if she doesn’t want to. Also, we think this might have worked better for us if she wore her hair up.
