Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest took extremely different approaches to their red carpet style at the premiere of My Oxford Year.

They also took the extremely expected if not totally played out approach of dressing in classic rom com lead style: she’s extravagant and impeccable and he’s hot and insouciant. Don’t look at us, straights. We sure as hell didn’t make up these rules. This one’s all on y’all.

It’s fine. We think it’s obvious that the point is to appeal to the potential viewership of this thing and we have to assume that this sort of bad boy romance cover style is deliberate. The tank top looks flimsy and the coat looks way too heavy with it. We appreciate that he didn’t attempt a leather jacket here.

She is the absolute queen of overdressing, which you might not know if you get all of your red carpet news from us. We’ll cop to it: we’ve passed over featuring pictures of her more times than we can count precisely because she dresses in this grandiose style for EVERYTHING. And while we appreciate the commitment to serving a look, we tend to find that approach both boring and a little pretentious. If you’re a true fashionista, or someone who knows how to use fashion effectively, you go for style. You don’t just sport a ballgown every time you step out. That’s why people like Cate, Tilda and Lupita have more than their fair share of misses and disasters. Risks and range will always make your style more interesting to cover. She’s always ready for a state dinner, but that doesn’t make her choices particularly interesting. This is fine; very much in the retro-glam mode she prefers. Like every brunette in Hollywood who likes to wear a dress, she plays around in the Audrey mode, which suits her. The thing is – and this is fully in support of everything we just wrote – we don’t have much else to say. It’s…fine. But it could use some jewelry.
