Why, Madonna. You surprise us. We didn’t think you could still do that, lady.
As we’ve noted before, this year’s Met Gala was unique in its history because it was one of the few times that white women were at a distinct disadvantage when it came to realizing the theme. As a reminder: the theme of the Met Costume Institute exhibit is about Black dandies and the theme for the Gala itself was “Tailored For You,” which was something of an out for anyone who didn’t want to try to embody Black dandyism. Seems like a lot of ladystars didn’t want to wear suits for the night. We love that Madonna understood that a swanky suit was the best – and only – way for her to go. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a gown to the Met Gala, but it’s nice to see Madonna tamping down on her own excesses. It’s a shame that pants were too long. Can’t sport that trend while walking a rainy New York sidewalk, no matter how fabulous your destination.
