Jodie Foster is starring in a new mystery thriller as a French-fluent American expatriate in France getting caught up in a murder and the VERY IDEA of it has us swooning. We’re not sure when Vie Privèe will open, but you can bet these two excitable queens will be lining up. Maybe we’ll camp out, like Marvel or Disney fans. Anyway, we are also happy to report that she made some rather interesting and notable style choices for the Cannes photo call and premiere. Join us in assessing them, won’t you?
IN DIOR AT THE PHOTO CALL
Here’s what: We don’t actually like this dress, largely because of the fringe, which is ugly to our eyes and which have her in a pair of platform sandals, which doesn’t strike us as very Jodie. On the other hand, she had a very locked-in, mature sort of style that for years that suited her, but tended to speak of someone looking toward retirement and lifetime achievement awards. This is adventurous in a way that looks great on her. The print and the colors are gorgeous and if it ended in a different sort of hem, we’d be spewing huzzahs at it.

And then she kinda went a little Star Wars on us, which is just about the least likely style direction for her. There’s great drama in this design, and the minimalist elements tend to be her go-to preferences, but the waist piece, which we presume to be an actual shell of some sort, isn’t working for us. It’s gorgeous, but it looks heavily out of proportion with the gown, which has a lightweight quality to it. But that isn’t to say we hate this. Like the previous look, this is genuinely interesting and speaks (to us, at least) of a renewed sense of… we don’t know — Investment? Excitement? — in her career. Winning that Emmy for True Detective seemed to have lit a fire under her. Even if we don’t love all the details here, we approve.
