The stars came out to salute Asian and Pacific Islander excellence at the annual Gold Gala. They also came to serve looks, which is what we’re concerned with here because we’re shallow people. Let’s get judgy!

Auli’i Cravalho in Naeem Khan

We just can’t get past the textile, which is ugly to our eyes.

Brenda Song in Oscar de la Renta

Kind of a musty and stale design that tends to give the impression it’s too big on her.

Can’t argue with that. This is a very toned-down look for her, although we haven’t covered her in some time. Maybe she’s evolving her style.

Daniel Dae Kim in Shao

It’s a very cute and very on-point homage to Bruce Lee’s iconic costume in Enter the Dragon. We get why he wore it, but it’s too casual for the setting.

H.E.R. in Kim Shui

It’s a simple design, but she looks gorgeous in it. Love the color. Hate the cliffhanging off those platforms.

Harry Shum Jr.

Meh. No effort in this at all. And if you’re going to wear an open silk shirt, why bother with an undershirt?

Joel Kim Booster in Ian Alexander
Pin

This is downright demure for him. He tends to go for much sluttier looks than this, so he’s apparently on his best behavior. It’s a pretty great look, although the mismatched whites bug a little.

Laufey in Huishan Zhang

The yoke is overdesigned, but the rest of it is spectacular.

Sandra Oh in Kallmeyer

We love this, although it feels a bit too casual for the setting. It comes off like very modern loungewear.

Sherry Cola in Shao

This is fabulous, but that hem length is baffling.

Tan France

No notes. Loving those killer heels.

Tayme Thapthimthong in Brooks Brothers and The Phukaw

Impeccable and adorable.
