We can remember a time when the rollout of any new season of Doctor Who was a decidedly low-key, not to mention UK-centric affair. But when Disney snatched up the franchise and cast fashion super-queen Ncuti Gatwa in the title role, the vibe shifted to one of serving high-fashion looks on glitzy red carpets.
You won’t hear us complaining about this turn of events. You will hear us complaining about Doctor Who because we’re still not over that awful season finale. It’s dampened our excitement for this new season, which is a shame. Doctor Who seems to always be about exciting casting announcements followed by lackluster scripts. But enough of that. Let’s assess the looks.
Varada Sethu
The design is extremely over-worked and is in dire need of some editing. The first thing to go has to be that trailing sash, but we’d wave our magic editing wand and reduce the pleating by about half. Still, it looks great on her. You can’t go wrong with a little red dress, even if it does look exhausted.
Ncuti Gatwa
We’re not feeling this at all. It’s too big, too… ecclesiastic in tone. It just swallows him up. And the few details added to prevent it from becoming a void – the flower, the cuffs, that horrifying cord sash – are all terrible additions. It’s like this outfit is trying to prove something but hasn’t yet decided what it wants to prove, if that makes any sense. Aggressive, but nonsensical.
Millie Gibson in David Koma
It’s an elegant look, but the hem should be raised a bit and she should’ve opted for sheer tights. Her tan is wildly uneven and they could have dialed back the settings on the makeup gun just a skosh.
