Newly minted Marvel star Pedro Pascal opted to attend the premiere of Thunderbolts* in London. He’s not normally the kind of guy to do promotional work for other people’s films and we wouldn’t really credit him with being the Company Man type who comes out in support of a major corporation every time they have an unveiling. No, he’s not here for Marvel. He’s not even here for the castmembers. He’s here for the dolls.

Stars like Pascal and Troye Sivan have been sporting designer Conner Ives’ “Protect the Dolls” tee, in support of trans women, a few times this month, pretty much making it go viral through the power of their stardom. Ives is selling the shirt on his site and all proceeds go to Trans Lifeline. As fashion, pretty much none of this is worth commentary, although the coat is nice. As an outfit, the pieces don’t really work together all that well. Pretty much the only item that pairs appropriately with a white tee is a pair of jeans and he probably didn’t want to come to his first Marvel premiere dressed too casually. No, the point here was the message, and as the brother of a trans woman and a fierce ally (if not more) to the LGBTQ community, it’s clear that this message is extremely important to him. We predict that we’re entering a period of politically fraught red carpetry and it’ll be interesting to see how we’re going to navigate these discussions going forward. Like, from a fashion perspective, that’s just a bad outfit. From a human perspective, it’s brave and beautiful.
