A$AP was being honored with the Cultural Innovator award at the Fashion Awards, which means Rihanna made a rare red carpet appearance in support of her man. She did not disappoint.

And by that, we mean that she didn’t disappoint in terms of showing up in the kind of outfit everyone’s going to spend the next day talking about. If you were expecting something chic and elegant or (lol) understated, then yes, you may be a bit disappointed. We have no doubt that the fashion editors and entertainment journalists all swooned, but let’s be real here: this is a mess of a look. The hat is kind of fun (if extremely dated in style) and the shoes are gorgeous (we’re relieved that she didn’t turn to her beloved lace-up ballet sandals), but that “dress” is a joke and no one will ever look good wearing it. We’re not mad at it, because she is who she is and this is the Fashion Awards, where this kind of attention-seeking is de rigueur, but we’re also not going to pretend it’s fabulous. He actually looks pretty great, if a little dull.
