If we wanted to be total stinkers, we’d put this one up to a vote, but that would be mean and also a little boring, since the voting’s likely to go overwhelmingly in one direction. Nickel Boys star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor absolutely never shows up anywhere in an outfit that could be called “conventional” and most of the time, we love that about her. But this season, while she’s been promoting Nickel Boys, her style has gone off the rails.
It’s just… not fabulous. We enjoy a little bit of fashion spectacle and we applaud any time a star opts to be weird in their choices, but nothing about this flatters her, elevates her, or makes her look good. It’s awkward, it looks cheap on her, and it tends to make her look a little… we’ll be kind and say “off.” Nothing about this direction works for what she’s trying to do.
