Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande cane to the star-studded, ultra-glam premiere in exactly the manner we predicted:
In their Halloween costumes.
Look, it’s our job to be bitches about this sort of thing, but in truth, we think the stars of Wicked probably have no choice but to show up for any promo events in really theme-y outfits that border on cosplay. The musical has an extremely ardent fanbase and the characters are broadly sketched archetypes that play with over a century of pop culture iconography. In other words, if you’re getting paid to bring Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West back to life onscreen, you better come correct for the publicity work or the fans will riot. Having said that, we’d love it if, just once, Cynthia showed up in pink and Ariana in green, just to mess with everyone.
So, here’s the thing: This is kind of ugly. Sorry, Cynthia. The green is garish and we’re afraid it’s not possible to make a vinyl gown with cutouts look classy or chic, no matter how many diamonds you add to the look. We like the fit and don’t mind the style, but the color and shiny finish are dealbreakers. The Oscar the Grouch coat is fun and helps the look a lot, largely because it obscures the dress.
Meh. It’s just so outrageously precious and twee that it’s giving us toothaches just looking at it. It’s interesting that she’s sporting a very Dorothy-like gingham, as if she were remixing the original iconography. We suppose it’s also to be expected that the stars of Wicked will deploy sparkly shoes every chance they get. In this case, it’s not so much the cosplay that bugs as it is the super-sweetness of the look. Still, like we said, this is surely what the fans want to see.
