We’ve all had opinions about Timothée Chalamet’s casting as the legend Bob Dylan for A Complete Unknown as we saw the on-location shots and teaser trailer roll in, but now it’s time for the main event of the pre-main event, aka, the release of the official trailer to let us know if our predictions and suppositions were true. Did he nail it? Is it going to be painful? You tell us? (But also, we’ll tell you what we think at the bottom of the post.)
It’s giving Walk the Line. That is neither a good or a bad thing, it’s just an indication of what kind of film it’s going to be and with this trailer, we think it’s obvious. It’s a standard Oscar bait music biopic. He’s doing a decent job of capturing certain aspects of Dylan. The one thing he can’t master is Dylan’s “old man” comportment. Chalamet comes off too youthful, not because he’s too young, but because Dylan always came across half a century older than he was and that’s a hard quality to capture. He’ll get good reviews and probably an Oscar nomination out of it, but this trailer isn’t indicating anything new or fresh about the approach.
