We’ll be doing a rundown of most of the more notable menswear looks at the Academy Museum Gala, but we figured we’d single out Leanin’ Eddie Redmayne for a little spotlight time. Especially since he went all dotty for the occasion.
He’s also managing pure verticality, for which we feel he is owed an “Attaboy” from us. As for his style, it continues to leave us bemused if not amused. The thing is, we spend so much time urging male stars to embrace their inner clowns and artists rather than succumb to drearily businesslike menswear standards. On paper, the kind of fashion he routinely chooses is exactly what we’re talking about. And yet we usually have a hard time accepting his choices because we tend to think he’s more suited to conventional styles. But he’s so consistent with his choices that we have to assume that he truly likes going a less conventional route. We don’t really have a point here except to ponder the differences between what suits a person best and what a person prefers. Anyway, this is actually fine by us. We can’t say we love polka dot formal menswear, and we dislike that thing that’s passing for a tie, but this is sharp and quirky and underlines his status as an artist and performer.
