We were hoping to see more of Winona Ryder on the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice publicity tour, but we can’t say we’re surprised that she’s being lapped by her onscreen daughter Jenna Ortega. Winona’s of that last generation of stars to come of age prior to the internet and the subsequent frenzy for red carpets, photo calls, outfit changes galore and everything else that comes with a modern PR junket. Jenna, of course, suffers from no such reluctance or reticence, so she’s out here on these streets doing the best Lydia Deetz impression she can. Unforch, our girl has lapsed into straight-up cosplay, which we kind of hate.
We hate the current trend for these flimsy satin skirts, but the rest of the look’s kind of great. Love that corset.
This is very cute, but it’s a near-perfect recreation of Winona Ryder’s final costume in the original film (during the unforgettable “Jump in the Line” sequence), albeit with some modern updates, like the crop top and those absolutely killer shoes. Of course we’d prefer that stars keep a line separating high fashion from costume design, but we know we’re not winning this battle. We’d be less harrumphy about it if she wasn’t also carrying a prop from the original film. Again, that bag is cute, but it’s only a few degrees removed from sporting a corporate logo as part of your promo work.
