Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny chose a dress for the film’s London premiere that embodies two things about modern red carpetry we hate: sheer gowns and theme-dressing. But you may be surprised to hear that we don’t actually hate this choice, although you might.

Now. Please note that we didn’t say this was perfect. We’re not even going to say that it’s fabulous. Instead, we’re going to characterize it in a way that sounds noncommittal or like a back-handed compliment: It’s interesting. Everything gets so samey-same on red carpets that it’s genuinely surprising to see something on a star at a major movie premiere that doesn’t look like some frock we’ve seen a thousand times before. As mentioned, we don’t think it’s perfect, however. The shredded leather embellishments give it a hardcore sort of feel and the pattern of their placement has a slight Giger undertone, in keeping with the franchise’s aesthetic. This is the kind of theme-dressing we can get behind. But all of that leather is pulling tremendously on the sheer causing a nearly unworkable level of puckering and wrinkling. In addition, we think the length is awkward. Gowns with dragging trains on red carpets can be such a tired cliche, but this one could’ve really used the drama. Anyway, that’s us. We’re actually more interested in finding out whether the Bitter Kittens can bring themselves to love a sheer gown, so let’s hear it:
