We gave Bad Bunny and Barry Keoghan a little spotlight time, but it’s time to pay tribute to all of those Met Gala men who opted to avoid wearing boring black tie. And when we say “pay tribute,” we of course mean “judge harshly.” Let’s go!
Alex Sharp in Balmain
This is extremely gimmicky, but it’s also striking and a little ingenious.
Andrew Scott in Versace
WHY? Why does he insist on dressing like some sort of action stud when it just doesn’t suit him? Let Paul Mescal be Paul Mescal. You’re in a different lane. Also, this is the goddamn Met Gala. Put on a proper jacket and shirt.
Colman Domingo in Willy Chavarria
This is gorgeous. The shapes are extreme, but elegant. Love the black floral detail.
Donald Glover in Saint Laurent
Meh. It’s an okay suit, but we hate that nude pantyhose color.
Ed Sheeran in Stella McCartney
It’s cute. Not exciting, but cute.
Eddie Redmayne in Steve O Smith
Leanin’ Eddie is trying way too hard.
Jack Harlow in Dior Homme
Very nice, if a bit subdued.
Jaden Smith in Thom Browne
He loses us a little with the footwear and what looks like a crop top, but we like how well all of this suits him. The jacket is perhaps a bit overdesigned but it’s pretty cool.
Jamie Dornan in Loewe
It’s exceedingly traditional, but he just looks so cuddly, doesn’t he?
Jonathan Bailey in Jonathan Anderson
While we think he can pull of a big floral detail with panache, we absolutely hate the size and placement of this one. We’re also mad at the puddling pants.
Josh O’Connor in Loewe
The super-long tails are kind of fun. The shoes are also kind of fun, but they really don’t do anything good for this look.
Lil Nas X in Luar
It’s just okay. Conceptually, it comes off a bit confused or half-assed. We’re not sure what the point is to all of that foofaraw around his waist. The off-white and silver color story is underwhelming. Definitely not among our favorite Lil Nas X looks.
Morgan Spector in Willy Chavarria
We loved this. We don’t think he needs the gloves and a shoe with a more substantial footprint would have balanced it out a little better, but we love the exuberant romance of it, coupled with his own smoldering looks.
Odell Beckham Jr. in Bode
We hate the proportions but the embroidery is beautiful.
Troye Sivan in Prada
Way too much silliness for way too little payoff. He looks like a twink junior detective in a bulletproof vest.
Usher in Alexander McQueen
This is sexy and the proportions are just right. Only he could pull of the combination of that hat and that suit.
