The cast of the upcoming Wicked movie came out in eye-popping Oz-wear for CinemaCon. Brace yourselves for another minor rant.
ARIANA GRANDE AND CYNTHIA ERIVO
Please allow us a moment to scream long, loudly and ultimately impotently.
ARIANA GRANDE IN OSCAR DE LA RENTA
CYNTHIA ERIVO IN VERSACE
We know the fashion press is going to gush over these two wearing costumes throughout the tour just as we know we can’t spend an equal amount of time railing against it. Our dislike of theme dressing or cosplay to promote films is well-documented and we’ll get plenty of opportunities to restate it because it’s clearly not going away. We’ll just say this: not everybody can work theme-dressing on the level of your Margot Robbies and Zendayas, not even Margot and Zendaya sometimes. Neither of these ensembles are objectionable on the merits, although we think Ariana’s is a little stale and twee while Cynthia’s is borderline tacky. We don’t care what Versace says, those boots are stagewear.
JEFF GOLDBLUM
This, to our way of thinking is a much more fun way to approach the brief. It’s way too much, but he’s sort of the King of Way Too Much. This feels less like cosplay because it suits him so well. That’s a gorgeous coat.
JONATHAN BAILEY (IN LOEWE) AND MICHELLE YEOH (IN MAX MARA)
He’s a snack no matter what he wears, but his sparkly disco sweater makes him extra snackable. We can’t say we love her suit unreservedly but we’re happy to see she’s avoiding cosplay for the moment.
