We’d just as soon never cover Johnny Depp again, but we have reasons for wanting to point out a few things about his style choices here in light of his public relations issues (an intersection of topics that is near and dear to us). Slightly more importantly, covering a star we’d prefer not to cover presents an opportunity to reiterate a point that we feel occasionally needs restating: coverage isn’t “support.” We’re not a fan site and if we feel a controversial or cancelled star or designer merits some sort of commentary, we’ll do it, because that’s the job. We hate to get grandiose about our tasks and roles, but sometimes, it’s necessary to post a reminder that independent media isn’t a synonym for amateur media and at its heart, what we do is a loosey-goosey form of opinion journalism. So, with that wordy proviso out of the way, check out what Johnny Depp wore to the London premiere of his proposed comeback film Jeanne Du Barry:

It’s so generic as to be almost unworthy of comment – and that is very much the point of it. Remember, this is the guy we once dubbed an “elderly gay windchime” because of his overwhelming preference to cover himself in gewgaws, scarves and various forms of jingle-jangle. He always preferred to dress more like a rockstar than an actor, but the look had calcified at some point in his middle age and it looked increasingly stale and pathetic over time. This is such a massive shift in tone that it almost feels like something a defendant would wear to court. Again, that’s very much the point of it. He’s pleading his case to the public, presenting himself as a mature and respectable performer. Not for nothing, but he looks like he’s going to combust if he has to stand there much longer in that getup. There’s no point in performing respectability if you look like you hate it.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
JEANNE DU BARRY is a 2023 historical drama film written, directed, and produced by Maïwenn and starring herself and Johnny Depp in the leading roles. It also stars Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, and India Hair. Its plot centres on Madame du Barry, who uses her intelligence and allure to rise in society. She becomes King Louis XV’s favourite, they fall in love, and against all propriety and etiquette, du Barry moves to Versailles, where her relationship with the king scandalises the court.
