The stars came out for a rather sedate evening of color-free looks-serving and we’re starting to hit the wall on this whole funereal trend happening smack in the middle of awards season. We realize y’all took a hit this year with that strike business, but there’s no reason to be dressing like a coven every time y’all get together. We gave Lily Gladstone the spotlight treatment, but here are a bunch of the other notable attendees getting their goth on.
Andrew Scott in Sandro Paris
It’s an interesting suit, but he always gets the fit and/or proportions wrong.
Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani
Hate the cutouts. She looks gorgeous in a sparkly black, but this design is a yawn.
Bradley Cooper
It’s a nice tux. Opting to go tieless and unshaven are choices, for sure.
Celine Song
You should view this as an addendum to yesterday’s Lady Directors With Style post. Song, the director of Greta Lee’s film Past Lives, is working a much better “stern governess” look than Greta Gerwig did. (Editorial note: This is almost certainly the first time T Lo have ever used “Greta” twice in a sentence, referring to two different people)
Da’Vine Joy Randolph
Simple, but effective. This isn’t a showy event, but a little more jewelry would’ve been welcome.
Elizabeth Olsen in Thom Browne
Any time a star works a Thom Browne look that we haven’t seen a thousand times before is a good thing. We love the jacket and skirt, but we’re not convince that white top works with the former.
Jessica Chastain in Vivienne Westwood
BLESSED COLOR, PRAISE BE TO THIS GODDESS. It’s amazing how you can look like a million bucks just by avoiding the night’s trend. This is a classic Westwood design that suits her to a tee, rendered in a truly gorgeous color.
Laura Linney
We don’t like the hem and we think there are tons of more interesting show options, but this fulfills our stated rule that if you’re going to wear a matte black dress on a red carpet, make sure it’s interesting. This is all shape. Love the earrings.
Maura Tierney
We feel safe in stating that no one would look good in that neckline.
Paul Giamatti in Dolce & Gabbana
The grooming’s on point but the suit is ill-fitted and too businesslike.
Sunrise Coigney and Mark Ruffalo
She looks great, he looks acceptably good but dull.
Teyana Taylor in Christopher John Rogers
Is this a fantastic color or are we just starved? We’re gonna say both. It looks great with her hair. The fit is looking pretty good too. Not sure about the shoes.
Zac Efron in Brioni
As big a NO as we can muster to those drawstring pants, but he looks great from the waist up. Hate the horsebit loafers.
