Are we milking the very last of the pre-strike red carpetry for all its worth? Yes. But we also think Issa Rae deserves at least as many spotlight posts as her fellow Barbie Margot Robbie, even if she isn’t engaging in the high-level cosplay her co-star has been deploying. Case in point: this look for the second London photo call, which is a really cute high summer day look in the Barbie mode (with issues):
Listen, Margot’s red carpet tour is going to be seen as the red carpet story of the year and we would never be grumpy about a star using fashion to promote herself to high heaven. But we’re fashion folks around here, which means we’re still old-fashioned enough to prefer that red carpets be more of a fashion event than a costume event. That’s not to say we had a problem with Margot’s doll recreations, but we actually find Issa’s more relaxed, less literal approach to be the more stylish one. The aforementioned issues? That wackadoo bustline, for one. Who wants to look cantilevered? The skirt’s great, but it hits a little high in the waist and we can’t help thinking it needs a belt, even if there are no belt looks. But the mani, shades and sandals are all perfectly on point.
