Cathy Cambridge at the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace

Once again, Mrs. Cathy turned the royal dials up to eleven at exactly the time and place she’s most expected to do so. Buckingham Palace held another garden party today, which the Duchess of Cambridge hosted along with Prince William, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, and Princess Beatrice welcoming 8,000 guests in gratitude for their community service. Whatever else you may say of her, Kate always knows and does what’s expected of her. In other words, here she is, serving the full royal drag, like she just walked out of some period drama:

She wore this dress at a different palace reception back in 2019 and it’s reportedly a custom job made by a private dressmaker. Unlike the last time she wore it, she went explosively matchy-match on the royal accessories. This is what we like to call “tea towel Kate,” the instantly and deliberately iconic version of her that she will almost certainly still working several decades from now. It’s a little too precious to be seen as fashion or high style. This is image craft and she’s wearing a costume.
