Dakota Johnson got the spotlight treatment but director Maggie Gyllenhall and the other stars of The Lost Daughter also hit the premiere red carpet in distinct high style.

It’s editorial and unexpected. We think the design is kind of interesting. But we don’t think the style necessarily plays to her strengths and it doesn’t photograph particularly well in a red carpet setting. She needs to be doing Vogue posing to make this work. Nothing can save those tissue box shoes, though.

It seems like we’re seeing more and more coatdresses on the red carpet lately. As a trend, we welcome it, if for no other reason than it still feels mildly unexpected. But it’s definitely a trend that’s going to be wearer-specific, if not garment-specific to work. We’re happy to report that this looks fantastic on her. It’s a little bulky, but the textile is gorgeous and we think she’s well balanced by the killer shoes and punk hair.

We love the combination of her styling and this dress. The borderline Goth hair and makeup works really well with a more or less conventional gown. That feather treatment looks like it could get really annoying, but it definitely adds something to the mystique of the whole look. She looks vaguely other-worldly and that’s a great style for her.
