In the interests of providing you with comprehensive pop culture coverage and not restricting ourselves to only the things that interest us, here’s a pretty little trailer for something that doesn’t hold a whole lot of interest for us:
Fabulous and opinionated we may be, but we like to think we’re not assholes about it. Besides, we learned a long time ago that badmouthing romantic fiction in any form will prompt an avalanche of righteous fury upon one’s ass. This doesn’t particularly appeal to us, but we can see the appeal, if that makes any sense. Having said that, this just feels like a bunch of romantic narrative tropes being ticked off one by one. But as we’ve said before about genre fiction, there’s often comfort to be found in stories that cater to specific fanbases by giving them exactly what they want to see. The familiarity is often the point of stories like these.
The mid-Century fashion is gorgeous, but we have a hard time seeing Shailene Woodley as the bored wealthy wife in this tale.
A pair of interwoven stories set in the present and past, THE LAST LETTER FROM YOUR LOVER follows Ellie Haworth (Felicity Jones), an ambitious journalist who discovers a trove of secret love letters from 1965 and becomes determined to solve the mystery of the forbidden affair at their center. As she uncovers the story behind Jennifer Stirling (Shailene Woodley), the wife of a wealthy industrialist, and Anthony O’Hare (Callum Turner) the financial journalist assigned to cover him, a love story of Ellie’s own begins to unfold with the assistance of an earnest and endearing archivist (Nabhaan Rizwan) who helps her track down more letters.
