Pop Style Opinionfest: Colton Underwood’s Problematic Coming Out

Posted on April 16, 2021

Darlings, what happens when a problematic-as-hell celebrity with a messy personal life comes out? Well, we’ll tell you, since you asked so nicely.

Bachelor star Colton Underwood’s coming out on Good Morning America this week may have been the most difficult and messy celebrity coming out in quite some time. We try to navigate the waters showing why almost any queer person should be supported during this moment while also acknowledging that Colton’s own actions stalking and harassing Bachelor co-star Cassie Randolph should not be ignored. What do you do when someone who shouldn’t be considered a role model comes out? And why was there such a problematic response to it?

In related news, we take a look at the rather disheartening brouhaha that erupted when fashion photographer Michael Bailey Gates took a nude self-portrait with a Valentino bag and the picture was posted as a promotional image on the brand’s Instagram.

It got ugly and transphobic pretty damn quick, prompting us to have a discussion about how the rhetoric surrounding queer people is getting uglier and why.

All that AND a review of the first episode of HBO’s The Nevers.

Again, we wind up navigating those difficult waters as we acknowledge show creator Joss Whedon’s history of abuse while pointing out that – cliches and overstuffed storylines aside – it’s an extremely high-quality production.

So apparently it’s Problematic Week here on the PSO, but we promise, we try to keep things light and chipper. As always, thank you for listening, darlings!
