H.E.R.’s entire look at the Oscars was probably the most interesting and unique ensemble of the entire night – and that’s saying something, because the fashion was especially fabulous this year and quite a few people (mostly men, which is shocking) took some risks and pushed some envelopes.

We’ve always noted that actors and musical performers usually have very different styles and approaches to the red carpet. Think of how Lady Gaga looks when she’s promoting an album vs. how she looked when she was promoting A Star is Born. Different styles, different goals. Actors dress to sell you on their visual brand and their suitability for whatever types of roles they’re pursuing. Maria Bakalova, for instance, is selling a version of herself that says “I’m ready for romantic leads and period pieces” with her fashion choices. But pop stars and musicians want to sell you on a feeling, an attitude and/or a persona. If we had no idea who she was, we’d take one look at this outfit and assume she was a musical performer of some sort.

Anyway, we love it completely. It’s so different from the usual Oscars red carpet fare that it instantly becomes more memorable than most of the other looks as soon as you see it. The color is gorgeous, the hood and shades remind us of Prince (whether deliberate or not, never a bad connection for an artist to make), and the cape was embroidered with the lyrics of her nominated song “Fight For You.” Top all that off with the most dramatic hair of the night and you’ve got a killer look.
